Tennis: Eala, Bassols cruise to W25 Palma del Rio doubles semis

Rosy Mina

No. 4 seeds Filipino Alex Eala and Spanish Marina Bassols Ribera moved on to the doubles semifinals of the W25 Palma del Rio with a straight-sets win in the quarterfinals, Wednesday in Spain.

Eala and Bassols Ribera defeated Marta Huqi Gonzalez Encinas of Spain and Ashley Lahey of the United States, 6-1, 6-3, on the outdoor hard court of Polideportivo Municipal el Pandero.

The Filipino-Spanish duo quickly romped to a 5-1 edge, which was marked by love service holds in the fourth and sixth games.

They went on to break in the seventh game at 40-30 to take the first set, 6-1, then proceeded to clinch a 4-0 lead in the second set.

A break of serve in the sixth game allowed Eala and Bassols Ribera to serve for the match at 5-1, but Gonzalez Encinas and Lahey broke back courtesy of a double fault.

Gonzalez Encinas and Lahey leveled up to trail at 3-5, and Eala and Bassols Ribera responded to this with a determined service hold to win the match, 6-3.

In the semifinals on Thursday, the fourth-seeded Eala and Bassols Ribera will challenge No. 1 seeds Valeria Savinykh of Russia and Fanni Stollar of Hungary, who received a walkover in the quarters.

In the first round, Eala and Bassols Ribera overwhelmed Spaniards Adriana Cortes and Patricia Rodriguez Carretero, 6-0, 6-0.

More than a week ago, Bassols Ribera beat Eala to win the W60 Madrid title.

Meanwhile, in the singles draw of the $25,000 tournament, WTA World No. 337 Eala will play against No. 2 seed Jessika Ponchet of France in the second round also scheduled on Thursday.

Eala, 17, overwhelmed Jimar Geraldine Gerald Gonzalez of Chile, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round.

The Filipino teen sensation has two professional titles under her belt: the 2021 W15 Manacor in Spain and 2022 W25 Chiang Rai in Thailand.

ROBREDO, SOTTO TAKE OATHS TODAY

President Maria Leonor Gerona-Robredo and Vice President Vicente Sotto III take their oaths of office today before Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesimundo at the historic Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan, at exactly 12:00 noon.

At 4:00 p.m., at the Quirino Grandstand at the Luneta, Robredo will deliver her Tagalog inaugural speech detailing her vision and program of the government.

Why Tagalog and why Luneta, not Barasoain, where her oath was taken?

"So I can be understood and seen by the masses, especially the common folk, to whom I dedicate my presidency."

The country's 17th president was not relaxed last night, in anticipation of her assumption of the highest position in the land.

"I am nervous and apprehensive of the high expectations of the people, particularly the poor, from my presidency amid the monumental economic problems confronting the nation," he confessed.

She cited problems that have become critical, such as a 13% unemployment rate, double-digit inflation, peso depreciation, acute food shortage in El Nino-stricken Mindanao, and rising criminality.

But Robredo said she will do his best to reverse the odds and win. "The people have chosen me to be their captain ball, and I am now holding the ball. I will do my best to score and win."

"With Tatay Digong (President Duterte) as my coach, and Lolo Erap (Former President Estrada) as my team adviser, I believe we can win even in the global competition," Robredo said.

Robredo begins his day early this morning in meditation at the tomb of her husband, Jessie.

"In memory of my father and in his honor, I will again pledge to serve the people well with dedicated, honest, and clean public service, as I had done in the past," the new President of the Republic of the Philippines, Leni Gerona Robredo, vowed.

UPDATE ON HOUSE AND SENATE LEADERSHIP FIGHT

Manila, June 30, 2022 - Nothing is yet certain about the final leader of the next Congress. In the Senate, it is still a 3-way fight for the Senate Presidency, with Senator-elect Francis Joseph Escudero insisting that he's still in the race.

"It is not yet final, we (Cayetano, Go) still have to talk and discuss the issue next week.

It was Senator Christopher Go who said Pimentel has expressed willingness to settle for the chairmanship of two committees and by doing so, had virtually withdrawn his bid. Pimentel refused to comment about it, saying he did not want to make it appear that he and his rivals were "horse-trading."

Fernan claims to have the support of 21 senators and will try to convince Go to back out for the sake of Senate unity. But Go said he would push for the holding of secret balloting to elect the next Senate President. Secret balloting, Ople said, is the only way the true will of the senators would be reflected and it would also deter outside interference in Senate affairs.

In the House of Representatives, it is a 3-cornered fight as well, with Reps. Lord Velasco and Gloria Arroyo challenge the richest member of Congress, Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez for the post of Speaker.

A list leaked to newsmen showed that Velasco and Arroyo may coalesce and use the strength of their 95 congressmen-allies. The figure is 30 congressmen short of the required majority to secure the post.

The group of Las Pinas Rep. Manny Villar, which earlier claimed to have the support of more than 150 congressmen, could only come up with 56 and is now scrambling to secure the votes of 67 uncommitted, undecided solons.

Duterte on ABS-CBN: I told Congress they're dealing with scoundrels

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said that he had struck at ABS-CBN, saying that he told members of Congress that they were dealing with cheats.

Duterte made the remark just three days before he stepped down from Malacanang and almost two years after a House committee denied the franchise renewal of the media company.

He made the remarks in a speech after the oath-taking of local officials in his hometown of Davao City, where his son Sebastian was elected mayor.

"Tinira ko talaga sila," Duterte said.

"I used the presidential powers to tell Congress that you are dealing with scoundrels and if you continue to kowtow with them, kawawa ang Pilipinas," he added.

Then presidential spokesman Harry Roque maintained Malacanang was neutral on the issue of ABS-CBN's franchise despite Duterte's grievances against the company such as the unaired campaign advertisements in 2016.

The National Telecommunications Commission on May 5, 2020 ordered ABS-CBN to stop its television and radio operations after its franchise expired.

The House Committee on Legislative Franchises on July 10, 2020 junked the corporation's application to renew its franchise.

On September 10, 2020, the NTC took away ABS-CBN's assigned frequencies.

GMA News Online is trying to get ABS-CBN's comment as of posting time.

In its statement after its application was denied, ABS-CBN maintained that its work had "been rendering service that is meaningful and valuable to the Filipino public."

The President also said that ABS-CBN had unpaid tax dues despite the Bureau of Internal Revenue, in February 2020, declaring that ABS-CBN had no pending tax liabilities.

Likewise, the BIR and the Securities and Exchange Commission also said in February 2020 that ABS-CBN did not violate the law.

The said House panel, in denying ABS-CBN's franchise application, claimed ABS-CBN violated its previous franchise because of the following reasons:

its former Chairman Eugenio Lopez III was both a Filipino and American citizen

the issuance of Philippine Depositary Receipts supposedly favoring foreigners

inappropriate program content

meddling in politics

tax avoidance schemes

less than exemplary labor practices, among others.

Maguindanao plebiscite slated

The Comelec decided to delay the referendum last year to give more time to prepare for the May 2022 national and local elections.

COTABATO CITY — The provincial government of Maguindanao disclosed that it has set aside a total of P100 million to fund the 17 September plebiscite to split the province into two.

This comes after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) earlier set the referendum following the ratification of Republic Act 11550, which mandates the creation of two provinces upon approval by the majority of the votes cast by the voters in 36 municipalities of Maguindanao.

“The people will decide through the plebiscite whether to ratify or not the law creating Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte,” said provincial administrator Atty. Cyrus Torreña.

To recall, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the law on 27 May 2021. However, the Comelec decided to delay the referendum last year to give more time to prepare for the May 2022 national and local elections.

Under the law, Maguindanao del Norte will be composed of the towns of Barira, Buldon, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Kabuntalan, Matanog, Northern Kabuntalan, Parang, North Upi, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura and Talitay.

Its seat of government will be Datu Odin Sinsuat town.

On the other hand, Maguindanao del Sur will be composed of Ampatuan, Buluan, Datu Abdulla Sangki, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Datu Montawal, Datu Paglas, Datu Piang, Datu Salibo, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Datu Unsay, Gen. Salipada K. Pendatun, Guindulungan, Mamasapano, Mangudadatu, Pagalungan, Paglat, Pandag, Rajah Buayan, Sharif Aguak, Sharif Saydona Mustafa, Sultan sa Barongis, Talayan and South Upi with the seat of government located at Buluan.

If the law is ratified, reelected Governor Bai Mariam Mangudadatu will act as governor of Maguindanao del Sur while Maguindanao vice governor-elect Bai Ainee Sinsuat will be named as governor of Maguindanao del Norte.

Torreña said the division of Maguindanao has many benefits particularly to Maguindanaons in far-flung areas.

Comelec sets plebiscite for Maguindanao

Residents of Maguindanao will get a chance to vote in a plebiscite on Sept. 17 to decide whether to split their province into two or retain it as one. In a five-page resolution, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) set the guidelines for the voting to ratify Republic Act 11550, which President Duterte signed in May last year.

The law divides the province into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.

Although the poll body was given only 90 days to hold a plebiscite, it decided to postpone the vote until after this year’s general elections to allow ample time for preparations.

Given this, the Comelec banned the appointment or hiring of new employees, creation of new positions, promotion or giving of salary increases, remuneration or privileges until Sept. 16, or a day before the scheduled plebiscite.

It also gave the local Comelec office until Aug. 18 to post the computerized voters’ lists and constitute the members of the Municipal Plebiscite Board of Canvassers and their respective support staff.

They are also given until Aug. 25 to inspect polling places and create the Provincial Plebiscite Board of Canvassers.

The information and campaign period will run from Aug. 16 to Sept. 15. A gun ban will also be implemented from Aug. 16 to Sept. 24, the last day of the plebiscite period.

On plebiscite day, casting of votes will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The canvassing of votes and proclamation of plebiscite results will be held beginning 6 p.m.

A similar plebiscite was held in Palawan in March 2021, wherein a majority voted not to divide the province into three.

Maguindanao plebiscite set September 17

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) set the plebiscite for the division of Maguindanao into two provinces on September 17.

Based on Resolution 10797, the Comelec said the referendum for the split of the province into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur will be held on September 17.

"The Commission on Elections hereby sets the date of the plebiscite to ratify the division of the province of Maguindanao into two provinces, namely, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur, on September 17, 2022," said the Comelec.

On Plebiscite Day, the casting of votes will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the counting to immediately take place after its closing.

The Municipal and Provincial Board of Canvassers is then set to convene and canvass the votes around 6 p.m. of the same day.

The poll body said the plebiscite period is set to run from August 16 to September 24.

During the plebiscite period, it will be prohibited to carry firearms and other deadly weapons, as well as maintain strike forces.

It will also be prohibited during the plebiscite period to suspend local elective officials, as well as transfer officials and employees in the civil service.

The campaign period will be from August 16 to September 15.

During the campaign period, there is expected to hold of barangay assemblies, fora, or "pulong pulongs."

A ban on public works construction, hiring and promoting employees, release of public funds, and removal and destruction of plebiscite propaganda materials will also be in effect during the campaign period.

Under Republic Act 11550, Maguindanao province is being divided into two: Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.

The division, however, requires the approval of the majority of the votes cast by the Maguindanao voters in a plebiscite to be conducted and supervised by the Comelec.

Back in the May 2022 elections, Maguindanao has a total of 939,011 registered voters. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)

Referendum set to split Maguindanao province

By Edwin Fernandez

The Maguindanao provincial government has set aside PHP100 million to fund the September 17 plebiscite to split the province into two.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has earlier set the referendum following the ratification of Republic Act (R.A) 11550, which mandates the creation of two provinces upon approval by the majority of the votes cast by the voters in 36 municipalities of Maguindanao.

“The people will decide through the plebiscite whether to ratify or not the law creating Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte,” said lawyer Cyrus Torreña, the provincial administrator.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed the law on May 27, 2021, but the Comelec decided to delay the referendum last year to give more time to prepare for the May 2022 national and local elections.

Under the law, Maguindanao del Norte will be composed of the towns of Barira, Buldon, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Kabuntalan, Matanog, Northern Kabuntalan, Parang, North Upi, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura, and Talitay.

Its seat of government will be Datu Odin Sinsuat town.

Its seat of government will be Buluan.

“More infrastructure development will come and more basic services could reach the constituents,” he said.

Voter registration set July 4 to 23

Voter registration will resume from July 4 to 23 as part of preparations for the holding of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in December, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said yesterday.

In a Viber message, Comelec acting spokesman Rex Laudiangco told journalists that the poll body approved a resolution setting the schedule for the resumption of voter registration.

Laudiangco said the registration is for both the regular and SK poll voters.

He said the period set for voter registration is in compliance with Republic Act 8189 or the Voter’s Registration Act of 1996, which prohibits the conduct of the registration within 120 days before election day.

The barangay and SK elections will be conducted on Dec. 5, which means scheduling the registration on Aug. 7 is not allowed, Laudiangco said.

“We have only from July 24 to Aug. 6 to post or publish the names of voter registration applicants, set election registration board hearings, subject registrants to database verification, conduct ERB hearings, draft and approve precincts, and cluster established precincts when necessary,” Laudiangco said.

“There are post-registration activities and requirements that need to be accomplished on time aside from the inclusion or exclusion petitions, which will be filed, heard and decided,” he added.

Aside from the resumption of the registration, Laudiangco said the Comelec en banc approved a plebiscite for the ratification of the division of Maguindanao into two provinces – Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur – on Sept. 17.

Vote-buying

Meanwhile, a vote buying complaint against a representative, mayor and vice mayor of Biñan, Laguna as well as 80 others was filed yesterday before the Comelec.

Rep. Marlyn Alonte-Naguiat, Mayor Walfredo Dimaguila Jr. and Vice Mayor Angelo Alonte were among the respondents in a complaint filed by Michael Gerard Thomas Yatco, Audrey Amoroso and Christopher Santos.

The complainants said they have at least 33 witnesses, video footage and photos to support their claims.

They said several residents informed Yatco about their experiences on vote buying and other election-related offenses allegedly committed by the respondents.

Yatco ran but lost in the congressional race.

The complainants said some of their witnesses received money in separate activities led by barangay leaders on May 6, 7 and 8.

Why there will be a Maguindanao plebiscite on September 17

Senator Francis Tolentino, who sponsored the measure in the upper chamber, says the split would speed up the development of smaller Maguindanao provinces

MANILA, Philippines – The people of Maguindanao will decide on September 17, 2022, whether they want to keep their province as one, or divide it into two.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc on Wednesday, June 22, approved the date for the plebiscite to ratify the law dividing the province into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.

Why will there be a vote?

In May 2021, President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law a bill that divides Maguindanao into two provinces.

The law said a plebiscite to ratify it must be conducted by the Comelec within 90 days from when the measure would take effect, which would be around September that year.

But in August, the Comelec postponed the conduct of the plebiscite until after the 2022 elections due to preparations for the upcoming national polls.

The election body noted in Comelec Resolution No. 10716 that the Supreme Court, in the past, had allowed it to “defer the conduct of all plebiscites so as to enable it to focus all its attention and concentrate all its manpower and other resources on its preparation for the [2019] elections.”

Why is there a push for a Maguindanao split?

Senator Francis Tolentino, sponsor of the measure in the upper chamber, had said the split would speed up the political, social, and economic development of the smaller Maguindanao provinces, and make government services more accessible to their constituents.

“The size of the province remains to be a challenge for the provincial government to provide basic services like public health care, education, and transportation to the most remote villages,” March 9, 2021, Senate press release read.

“On a broader perspective, the creation of more public offices as a consequence of the division will further expand the democratic space for qualified and dedicated public servants to participate in the governance of the provinces,” the same release added.

Tolentino sponsored the House version of the bill, whose authors included Maguindanao 1st District Respresentative Datu Roonie Sinsuat Sr., and 2nd District Representative Esmael Mangudadatu.

Maguindanao, with a landmass of over 4,800 square kilometers, is the 20th most populous province in the Philippines with 1.6 million inhabitants, based on the 2020 census.

If Maguindanaoans vote in favor of the split, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur will each have 12 municipalities. The capital towns will be Datu Odin Sinsuat and Buluan, respectively.

The division of Maguindanao has been a long journey, dating back to as early as 2006 when the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao formed the province of Shariff Kabunsuan from the 10 municipalities in Maguindanao.

While the referendum at the time resulted in a landslide victory in favor of the split, the new province was dissolved only two years later after the Supreme Court ruled its creation was unconstitutional.

Plebiscite for Maguindanao split into 2 provinces set Sept. 17

A PLEBISCITE for the division of Maguindanao into two provinces is set on Sept. 17, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Thursday.

The Comelec full court decided on the schedule during their regular session on Wednesday, acting Comelec spokesperson John Rex C. Laudiangco told reporters in a Viber message.

In May last year, President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed into law a measure dividing Maguindanao, a province in southern Philippines under the Bangsamoro region, into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.

The Maguindanao provincial government earlier allocated P120 million for the plebiscite, wherein residents will decide whether or not to approve the split.

A similar plebiscite was held in Palawan in March 2021, wherein majority voted not to divide the province into three.

Last year, the election body had postponed several plebiscites that were supposed to be conducted before the May 9 national and local elections, citing time constraints for the preparations.

The Supreme Court, in a 2019 decision, upheld the Comelec’s power to “defer the conduct of all plebiscite so as to enable it to focus all its attention and concentrate all its manpower and other resources on this preparation for the said elections,” according to a Comelec resolution dated Aug. 18, 2021.

Meanwhile, Mr. Laudiangco also announced the approval of the resumption of the voter’s registration period from July 4 to 23 ahead of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in December. — John Victor D. Ordoñez

Plebiscite on dividing Maguindanao set in September

RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News

A plebiscite for the ratification of the division of Maguindanao into 2 provinces will be held on Sept. 17, 2022, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Thursday.

The Commission en banc set the date for the plebiscite during a regular session, said acting Comelec spokesperson Joh Rex Laudiangco.

President Rodrigo Duterte last year approved Republic Act 11550 which divided the southern province into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.

The 2 provinces will be created upon approval by the majority of residents in a plebiscite, the charter reads.

Maguindanao's land size has posed challenges to the delivery of basic services to its about 1.7 million residents, the sponsor of the law, Sen. Francis Tolentino, earlier said.

The creation of the 2 new Maguindanao provinces will make government services more accessible, he said.

Duterte, the first president from Mindanao, promised to bring progress to the countryside.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Melvin Matibag said he hoped that the incoming administration would expand "gains" in the Bangsamoro region. He said some 19,000 former rebels have been "decommissioned", while P2.6 billion was allotted to "socioeconomic" projects.

Plebiscite on dividing Maguindanao into 2 provinces set for September 17

By HANA BORDEY, GMA News

A plebiscite to decide whether to ratify the law splitting Maguindanao into two provinces has been scheduled by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for September 17.

This was announced by acting Comelec spokesperson Rex Laudiangco on Thursday.

Under Republic Act 11550, or the law dividing the province of Maguindanao into Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur, the two provinces will be created upon approval by the majority of the votes cast by the voters of the affected areas in a plebiscite to be conducted and supervised by the Comelec within 90 days from the date of the effectivity of the law.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed the law on May 27, 2021.

Under the law, Maguindanao del Norte will be composed of the municipalities of Barira, Buldon, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Kabuntalan, Matanog, Northern Kabuntalan, Parang, North Upi, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura, and Talitay. Its seat of government will be Datu Odin Sinsuat.

Maguindanao del Sur will be composed of Ampatuan, Buluan, Datu Abdulla Sangki, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Datu Montawal, Datu Paglas, Datu Piang, Datu Salibo, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Datu Unsay, Gen. Salipada K. Pendatun, Guindulungan, Mamasapano, Mangudadatu, Pagalungan, Paglat, Pandag, Rajah Buayan, Sharif Aguak, Sharif Saydona Mustafa, Sultan sa Barongis, Talayan, and South Upi. Its seat of government will be Buluan.

Meanwhile, the Comelec granted honoraria to 20 personnel of the Department of Information and Communications Technology who provided technical support during the May 9 national and local polls.

Further, the poll body approved the posting and publication of Forms "1" and "A" of the Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) of national candidates, party-list groups, and political parties on the Comelec website, subject to full compliance with data privacy laws, rules, and regulations. —VBL, GMA News

41 floats tell story of a nation

By Norman Bordadora

IT WAS the country's most colorful and grand parade. It wouldn't come any finer.

Among the most sentimental was the reenactment of the declaration of Philippine independence by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite. The La Solidaridad float which started the Propaganda Movement was among the most applauded.

It was in Kawit where the national tricolor was first waved to the tune of the National Anthem.

President Duterte accepted the Philippine flag from former Laguna Governor E.R. Ejercito, who marched from the replica of the Aguinaldo mansion after the ''Declaration of Independence'' vignette was finished to the singing of the National Anthem.

But the stop and salute flag-raising ceremony by playing and singing the National Anthem were heard coinciding with the simultaneous nationwide flag-raising ceremonies at LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3, various city, municipal and provincial halls, hotels, malls, and police stations.

A replica of the original Aguinaldo house was erected in front of the grandstand.

One touching vignette was that of the Edsa Revolution of 1986. Yellow banners and the golden replica of the Edsa Monument atop the float formed a striking contrast to the 7 p.m. sky.

The replica glistened as a red, white, and blue spotlight flooded the grandstand at nightfall.

Cory, Cory

Mr. Duterte and Mrs. Laurice Guillen, one of the special guests, smiled at each other when the People Power float rolled by the grandstand to the shouts of ''Cory, Cory,'' the flashing of Laban signs, and the upbeat strains of Mambo mambo Magsaysay.

Also, a moving sight was the military contingent which marched slowly but smartly to the bass drum and the zoom of four Philippine Air Force fighter jets, which flew by several times to the applause of the crowd.

Cadets from the Philippine Military Academy led the march of several battalions from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. They carried scores of Philippine flags, flags of the Revolution for Independence, and banners of the provincial commands.

Three Huey helicopters showered the parade with red, white, and blue confetti as they flew by several times--again to thunderous applause from the crowd.

The military parade did feature tanks and other military hardware. But the solemn march of able-bodied soldiers prompted the crowd to hail them ''Mabuhay!'' upon the coaxing of the public address announcer who bellowed ''Mabuhay ang sundalong Pilipino (Long live the Filipino soldier).''

No less colorful were the floats and theater performances about the coming of Islam and the struggle of Filipino Muslims. There were bright banners and vinta sails. Part of the floats with Islamic themes was the sarimanok.

The ''moving street theater,'' which started at the Anda Circle and moved along Roxas Boulevard before passing in front of the grandstand, crawled because the streets were clogged with people.

The parade started promptly at 2:30 p.m. but went well into the early evening.

Price of success

''This is the price of success,'' said National Centennial Commission director Luis Morales after seeing the carefully designed floats moved slowly in front of the grandstand to the applause of the barong tagalog and saya-clad crowd in the VIP section as well as the slippered class in the wings and streets.

The parade opened with a babaylan (priestess) prayer dance, followed by the Flora and Fauna Float, which was sponsored by the Social Security System.

Rollerskating dancers dressed as butterflies and nature fluttering creatures ushered in a float that showed how the Philippines was long ago.

''The Philippines was a paradise as it was blessed by God with trees, flowers and mountains teeming with life,'' read the narrator as the stylized trees, birds and mountains passed the grandstand while the butterflies on roller-skates danced around the float to disco music.

The first wildly applauded float depicted the epic battle between Mactan chieftain Lapu-Lapu and Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

The two were shown fighting atop a 20-float surf while 30 other actors, dressed as native warriors and Spaniards, engaged in mock sword fights in front of the float.

P40-M price tag

''It is really a fulfilling experience and we feel very patriotic. Despite all the difficulties, we somehow managed to come up with what could be the greatest parable ever,'' said Romulo de Los Reyes, secretary-general of the Grand Centennial Parade.

De Los Reyes told the Inquirer that the parade could easily cost P40 million.

''That of course would include the conceptualization of the floats the construction of the floats, the talent fees of the actors, actresses, and other performers,'' said De Los Reyes.

He added that the NCC was able to get help from the private sector.

Joel Torre led the showbiz personalities who participated in the parade. He appeared as national hero Jose Rizal in the Rizaliana float sponsored expectedly by RCBC.

Movie and theater directors Anton Juan, Soxy Topacio, Mel Chionglo, Francis Posadas, and Celso Ad Castillo each filled in to put the show together.

The Lucio Tan Group of Companies, GMA Network, Mastercard, Visa and Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons are each sponsored afloat.

The floats also depicted visions of the country's future.

Joining Mr. Duterte in watching some 60 floats and the performance of artists were former President Fidel Ramos, former President Joseph Estrada, former President, and Pampanga 2nd District Rep.-elect Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President-elect Bongbong Marcos, Vice President-elect Sara Duterte, Vice President Leni Robredo, Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, and other government officials.

The foreign dignitaries were led by Sir Silas Atopare, governor-general of Papua New Guinea.

Set highest standards of journalism: PRRD to gov't radio stations

By Ruth Abbey Gita-Carlos

President Rodrigo Duterte has enjoined state-owned radio stations to continue setting the "highest" standards of journalism.

In a video message shown during the 75th anniversary of the Philippine Broadcasting Service-Bureau of Broadcast Services (PBS-BBS) held at Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City on Friday night, Duterte reminded of the dissemination of "factual and timely" information to the public.

"It is my sincere hope that you will all continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism and broadcasting as you faithfully disseminate factual and timely information to our countrymen, especially in the most far-flung areas in the country," Duterte said.

Duterte also lauded the PBS-BBS, an attached agency of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), for improving its service during his watch.

He expressed gratitude to government-run radio stations for keeping the Filipino people updated about his administration's efforts to bring change and development.

"As the state's radio network, you have the important duty of ensuring that the public is aware of the events happening around us and of government's efforts to improve the (lives) and promote the welfare of the Filipino people," he said. "In the last six years, PBS has improved and progressed by leaps and bounds."

Currently, PBS-BBS owns and operates radio stations nationwide, with dzRB Radyo Pilipinas 1 738 Manila as the flagship station.

The PCOO on Tuesday received the last batch of broadcast equipment donated by China under the Duterte administration.

Since 2019, China has donated several radio and information technology (IT) equipment to the PCOO in a bid to boost and revive the government media, as well as its broadcast and communications services.

China has so far donated a total of PHP140 million worth of radio and broadcasting equipment and PHP15 million worth of IT equipment to the PCOO.

This throwback clip of Kris Aquino guesting on 'Not So Late Night with Edu' is going viral

Well, here's a timely throwback for Thursday.

Kris Aquino's appearance on "The Not So Late Night with Edu" is currently going viral for all the correct reasons.

Uploaded by the Facebook page "View on the 3rd," the fresh-faced Kris Aquino, a presidential daughter back then, showcased her eloquence and gift of gab as she rode along Edu Manzano's curious questions and funny comments.

Among their topics of conversation they shared was Kris' ambition to join showbiz, how she looked up to the likes of Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Dina Bonnevie,  and how Kris sat on the steps of a cinema just to watch "Alabok sa Ulap," a movie starring Dina and Edu.

"I watched 'Alabok' by the way," she said hotly. "I sat on the ano, the stairs," Kris said trailing off, as a flabbergasted Edu caught her: "You sat on the stairs just to watch 'Alabok sa Ulap?'"

"Yup, that's how much I wanted to see Dina and you together," Kris remarkably recovered.

Their conversation is such a joy to watch — Kris displaying her smarts, Edu displaying his humor — that the clip has unsurprisingly has more than 1M views as of writing.

It's also generated more than 1K comments and a whopping 30K reactions.

The "Not So Late Night with Edu" aired on GMA-7 beginning 1985. — LA, GMA News

                  GTV

GTV is formed by the merger of the original QTV / Q and GMA News TV Channel 11 / 27, and primarily aired lifestyle programs and dramas particularly aimed at women. It is owned and operated by Citynet Network Marketing and Productions Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of GMA Network Inc. and ZOE Broadcasting Network. The network produces programs from studios located on the 22nd floor, Strata 2000 Bldg., F. Ortigas Jr. Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig, and the GMA Network Center, EDSA corner Timog Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City. The network's primary transmitter facility is located at the GMA Tower of Power site, Tandang Sora, Barangay Culiat, Quezon City and it operates Mondays to Thursdays from 5:30 a.m. to 12:15 a.m., Fridays from 5:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 12:00 midnight, as well as on truncated hours during the Paschal Triduum of the annual Holy Week.

GTV carries news and public affairs with the addition of entertainment, variety, lifestyle, and sports programs which is similar to the old format of what Citynet Television and QTV/Q had done before.

The channel is mainly targeted at women and youth audiences.
