How To Find Hope In The Midst Of Problems

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.  1 Corinthians 10:13

A neighborhood bully about ten years of age was invited to go to a local Sunday School, and the boy went.  The teacher recognized the lad and thought to herself, “I better really pour it on because I may never get the chance again!”  So she talked about the devil and pictured him as an evil, ugly creature replete with pitchfork and tail spitting fire, ready to devour bad boys who were bullies thinking that she just might scare the kid into the kingdom.  The visiting lad squirmed and looked at his feet as she really poured it on.  Then after about 20 minutes, she got his attention asking, “Now, young man, what do you think of the devil?  Aren’t you a little afraid of him?”  “Yeah, I guess I am afraid of that big old devil,” he drawled, “but if you bring a devil around just my size, I’m sure I could whip him.”

You know, friend, the problems that confront us in life are just that size, not an inch bigger than the grace of God which will meet you at the point of your deepest need.  The problem is, we forget that truth.  We often consider the problems which confront us to be disastrously large‑‑big old devils which are ready to destroy us, and I freely admit, there are some that seem that way.

“How are you so confident?” you may be asking in your heart.  “You don’t know about the problems I’ve got!”  True, I don’t.  But I do know that God knows, and I also know the promise of 1 Corinthians 10:13 which says, “No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it” (The Message).

What we often lose sight of, when we are pressed by difficulties, is the size of God’s grace and help.  We see only the family situation, the illness, the bills in your budget book, or the ache of a broken heart.

One of the most inspiring persons I ever met was a woman whose hands and limbs were badly crippled with arthritis.  Mrs. Cason, as we boys knew her, was painfully poor, living in a small mill town.  I was in college and some of us from the school would take her groceries from time to time, but almost every week one of us would go and read the Bible to her.  Finally, her arthritis crippled her so badly that she couldn’t get out of bed.  With no family and only a few neighbors to help, the future wasn’t very bright for this old woman, yet she was always sparkly bright and cheerful.  Most of her teeth were missing but her heart was filled with warmth and hope.

What I most remember about old Mrs. Cason was the fact she would say, “God has been so good to me!”  And to myself I would think, “Really?  Just look at yourself.  You can’t walk anymore; you can’t move around.  How can you say that?”  One day as I read Scripture and prayed with her, she said it again, “God has been so good to me!”  And I couldn’t hold it in any longer, “How can you really say that?” I asked her.  She quickly replied, “Without God’s help and strength I couldn’t stand the pain a single day!”

As Elizabeth Coatsworth put it, “The plant cut down to the root does not hate; it uses all its strength to grow once more.”  To you God would say, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).  I eventually finished school and moved.  The reports of her condition were less frequent and certainly less positive.  She’s been gone now for more than a third of a century, but those words will never be erased from my memory, “God’s been so good to me!”  How about it, friend?  Overcome with the pain of your problem?  Look beyond, and through it all you will still see the goodness of the Lord.

PBA: Munzon says Terrafirma has tools to reach playoffs

Top 3X3 player Joshua Munzon is confident that Terrafirma will be able to perform in the coming PBA season.

From finishing dead last in the previous season, the Dyip might even make it to the playoffs given the lineup they have now, said the Filipino-American player.

"I think we have a very talented team. We have Roosevelt Adams, he was the no. 1 pick last year. We have James Laput, the big fellow down there. We got a lot of talented guys in this team," said Munzon in the PBA website.

Despite trading away CJ Perez to San Miguel, Terrafirma has kept the services of Adams, backcourt partners JP Calvo and Juami Tiongson, Fil-Am Rashawn McCarthy, and big men Andreas Cahilig and Aldrech Ramos.

They also have Russel Escoto, Gelo Alolino, and Matt Ganuelas Rosser, all of whom were acquired in the trade for Perez.

Terrafirma ended up at last place during the all-Filipino bubble last year in Clark, Pampanga, and this allowed the team to secure no. 1 overall pick in the 6-foot-4 Munzon.

He was signed to a three-year max deal by the Dyip.

"Basically I'll go out there and play my game," he said regarding his initial talks with Dyip coach Johnedel Cardel. "We might be at the bottom last year, but I don't expect to be at the bottom this year with the team that we have."

"Hopefully, I can come in there and contribute and do the necessary things to move us up. Our goal is definitely to be in the playoffs and be a part of the conversation this year."

MMA: Aoki encourages rival Folayang to keep fighting

Dennis Gasgonia, ABS-CBN News

Japanese grappler Shinya Aoki believes fellow former MMA champion Eduard Folayang should continue fighting to overcome his slump.

Aoki forced Folayang to submit in one round during their trilogy fight last week, but he offered kind words for the Filipino striker.

"Let's fight again together a couple of years later," said the Japanese legend.

Aoki said Folayang should not be discouraged even after racking up a string of losses.

He said he has gone through a similar predicament especially after he got upset by the Filipino in 2016.

“Five years ago, I lost against him. After that, I went through some struggles and a hard time, but I overcame that,” said the Japanese fighter.

“I think Folayang is having the same situation. He is losing a lot, but I think he can come back again."

In their third bout, Folayang tried to prevent the fight from going to the ground where Aoki is more dominant.

But Aoki was able to outwit the Filipino by faking a standing triangle attempt before securing a takedown. Once on the ground, the Japanese secured a full mount before submitting Folayang with an armbar.

“I felt fear before going into the bout, but I won, so I am happy and satisfied now,” said Aoki.

Aoki is now 2-1 against Folayang.

“I thought it would be tougher against Eduard, but my ground control went well and the elbows dropped with very good timing, so that was the point that favored me.”

But he believes it not yet the end of Folayang's career.

"He is a good friend, a good opponent, hopefully we can fight again in the near future,” he said.

The witness of the start of the new era

The special edition of Gising Pilipinas focused on the reopening the network's free TV and radio broadcasting operations and featured statements by ABS-CBN president and chief executive officer Carlo Katigbak and chairman Mark López.

The President is actually looking forward to the end of his 6 year term and his return to his home province of Davao.

Duterte left the Malacañang Palace and Manila for a final time as commander-in-chief on June 30 after a tumultuous presidency stained by deep political divisions and pandemic that caused 500,000 deaths.

The president departed the Malacañang Palace, saying it had been a great honor to serve and giving a final wave as he boarded the helicopter for Davao City, where he delivered farewell remarks.

"So just a goodbye. We love you. We will be back in some form," Duterte told supporters before boarding the presidential helicopter for a flight to Davao. "Have a good life. We will see you soon."

The plane then taxied and lifted off as Frank Sinatra's classic song "My Way" played over the loudspeakers.

As per tradition, the incoming president will fetch the outgoing president at the Malacañan Palace. However, incoming President Cayetano and outgoing President Duterte arrived at the Bulacan State University on two separate Presidential choppers. After which, they rode the Presidential Car going to the Bulacan Provincial Capitol. After which, they witnessed a parade on the history of Bulacan. Afterwards, Duterte and Cayetano rode a coach which are part of the parade leading to the Barasoain Church. There, Duterte was given final military honors, after which, they proceeded to the Church. The program started with the Philippine National Anthem and a prayer led by Archbishop of Cebu Cardinal Jose Palma followed by a doxology. Vice President-elect Teofisto Guingona III was sworn in a few minutes prior to Cayetano to secure the constitutional line of succession.

At around 12 noon, Alan Peter Cayetano is sworn in as the country's 17th President during her inauguration at the Barasoain Church in Malolos City, Bulacan. 51-year old Cayetano is the oldest president in history and becomes the 17th president of the country. Among those who witness the oath-taking, his brothers and sisters. Also witnessed the oath-taking were former presidents Fidel Ramos, Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her predecessor Rodrigo Duterte. After which, former President Duterte was given departure honors and returned to the Bulacan State University while Cayetano on board the Presidential car. Cayetano proceeded to the Malacañang for the ceremonial climbing on the Grand Staircase and the induction of a new cabinet, and his first cabinet meeting.

Duterte left a note for his successor, Alan Peter Cayetano, a spokesman confirmed. Duterte has to mention Cayetano's name even as he wished the incoming administration luck on his way out of office.

Duterte, 77, bade his farewell hours before Cayetano was to be inaugurated. That made him that marks the formal transfer of power, in a final display of pique.

Duterte's arrival at his Davao city residence is being timed to get him before his term as president expires at noon.
