How To Identify Pride In Your Life

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

The Bible leaves no question about where God stands in relationship to what He loves and what He hates.  And furthermore, He makes it clear that He expects His people to incorporate His view in their personal lives. “There are six things the LORD hates,” wrote Solomon in the book of Proverbs, and the first to be mentioned is pride.  A lot of things could have been at the top of the list, yet arrogance and pride are especially distasteful to our heavenly Father. Why?  Why not put drunkenness or infidelity at the top of that list?  Why not drug use, or wars which tear families and nations apart?

Could it be that pride is so distasteful to the Almighty because. as perhaps no other sin, pride is taking credit for something that someone else has really done, and usually God is that Someone.  Have you ever noticed that in the English word pride the middle letter is the vertical pronoun, I?

I’m thinking of the tale which comes from Aesop’s Fables where a frog wants to go to a warmer climate and avoid the cold and snow of winter so he convinces two geese to hold a stick in their mouths as they fly south and he in turn grasps the stick firmly in his jaw and sets sail with the geese for the warmth of a sunnier climate.  The journey goes quite well until a farmer looks up and sees the frog being carried by the two large geese who have the stick in their beaks.  “My, what a marvelous picture of cooperation,” remarks the farmer out loud.  I wonder who was smart enough to think that up.”   Upon hearing the comments, the frog immediately responded, “I did!”  But in doing so, he turned loose of his stick and fell to the earth.  Proverbs says that “pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).   In the frog’s case, it was a long fall.

Two passages in the Old Testament speak of the fall of Satan, who at one time was an archangel in the presence of the Almighty.  Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 both tell of the pride which led to his downfall.  Satan said, “…I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God… I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:13,14).  But God allows no competition.

No individual makes it to the top on his own, and the person whose heart is lifted with pride takes credit for what he or she does not deserve.  One of the strange things about this malady is that those who are most infected with it recognize it the least.   Someone said that pride comes in three styles:  pride of race, pride of face, and pride of grace.  The first, pride of race, deals with the feeling of genetic superiority, something we are not born with but quickly acquire from our parents and peers.

The second kind of pride deals with arrogance, or the feeling that you are more beautiful, more intelligent, or more handsome than the other person–something which afflicts both men and women alike.

The third kind of pride–pride of grace–is the mistaken belief that you are more spiritual than others.  This kind of pride has a lot of variations–the belief that Baptists are right and Presbyterians are wrong and vice versa, the belief that all others are wrong and you are surely right.

Of one thing we are sure:  God hates pride–perhaps more than any of these other flaws of character.   Scripture is right:  “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).   No wonder God hates it so very much!

PSC receives P2.1-M remittance from PCSO

A total of P2,145,110.47 was remitted by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), in a simple ceremony at the PCSO Main Office in Mandaluyong City, Tuesday.

PCSO private secretary 2 Marie Louise Serojales and account specialist Joseph Porto formally turned over the check to PSC cashier Marini Negado, the first remittance this year.

"Ang PCSO ay kaagapay ng gobyerno para magbigay tulong sa buong Pilipinas. Despite the pandemic, we are mandated to give our contributions, especially to the PSC," said Serojales

Under Section 26 of the Republic Act 6847, the PCSO is mandated by law to remit 30% of its charity fund and proceeds of six sweepstakes lottery draws per year to the sports agency, which will be used for the PSC's sports development programs.

"We are grateful for the unending support of PCSO to our sports programs. Our vision won’t be possible without support from agencies like them. Malaking tulong po ito para lalo naming mapagbuti ang aming mga programa. Maraming salamat po," said PSC chairman William "Butch" Ramirez.

Among the grassroots programs of the PSC are Batang Pinoy, Philippine National Games, Children’s Games, and the Indigenous Peoples Games.

The charity agency also sent their well wishes to Team Philippines who will see action at the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games from July 23 to August 8, and the 31st Southeast Asian Games from November 21 until December 2 to be staged in Hanoi, Vietnam.

"Sana itong aming mandatory contributions kahit paano ay makapagdagdag ng tulong sa ating mga atleta. Sana ay magkaroon tayo ng pag-asa na makakuha ng gintong medalya sa darating na Tokyo Olympics at SEA Games," said Serojales.

Last year, the charity agency released more than P1.8 million to the government sports arm aside from the P2.3 million in 2019, the same year when the country hosted and claimed the overall championship of the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Bb. Pilipinas queen Cindy Miranda launched as next sex symbol in thriller

Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News

From playing a vampire in the teleserye “La Luna Sangre,” Binibining Pilipinas Tourism International 2013 Cindy Miranda meandered in several movie roles that tested her determination to stay in the biz and become a full fledged artist.

Now the long wait is over for Miranda, who will finally be launched as a lead actress in the sex drama thriller “Nerissa.” While accepting the fact that the big break as a sex symbol will entail a lot of steamy scenes and skin baring, Miranda is psyching herself on a different level.

“Beauty is not enough, I need to prove that I have the skills as an actress," Miranda told ABS-CBN News in a virtual conference Monday launching the project written by Ricky Lee to be directed Lawrence Fajardo.

Fajardo said the role of Nerissa, a lovely maiden stranded in an island, was tailored for Miranda who exudes the right element of beauty and aura of mystery in the movie to be released by VivaMax.

She will star opposite Aljur Abrenica, the fisherman who rescues and eventually marries her before he goes missing in a sea mishap.

The virtual conference also revealed other cast members including Elizabeth Oropesa, Bembol Roco, Sheree, AJ Raval, Guji Lorenzana and Sean de Guzman.

“Matagal kong inantay ito, ngayon eto na siya and excited na akong makatrababo sila,” said Miranda, who also took the counsel of the multi-awarded Oropesa that acting excellence will last beyond skin baring in movies.

“Maraming magaganda ang mukha at marami ding pwedeng maghubad pero ang importante 'yung acting skills. I really want to be known as an actress,” said the beauty queen who previously appeared in “Adan” where she played a lesbian lover.

Some elements in the storyline of “Nerissa” -- including male characters falling for the female protagonist and the use of the pivotal role of a moral guardian in the island to be played by Oropesa --remind cinephiles of the plots of “Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat Ng Lupa” and “Isla” both directed by the late Celso Ad Castillo.

But Lee clarified with ABS-CBN News that he drew inspiration from the early '80s Isabel Lopez-starrer “Isla.” Fajardo admitted the parallelism of “Nerissa” from “Isla” but stressed it will be completely different as a “strong film about women’s interests.”

Lee also described the movie as “sexy but empowering” about the rights of women.

Miranda said she hopes to acquit herself in the difficult role with the help of Fajardo and her co-stars.

‘I don’t want to be unfair to Jodi,’ Judy Ann says, in response to ‘Doctor Foster’ question

Screen icon Judy Ann Santos declined to answer outright whether the lead role in the Philippine adaptation of “Doctor Foster” was offered to her, out of respect for her fellow actress, Jodi Sta. Maria, who has been cast in the highly anticipated series.

Santos addressed the question in her Instagram interview with writer G3 San Diego, which streamed live on Monday night.

“I don’t know if I have to answer that question, kasi I don’t want to be unfair kay Jodi,” Santos said, when San Diego asked whether there is truth to speculation that she was, at one point, offered to portray the Filipino Doctor Foster.

“At the same time,” Santos added, “gusto ko rin maghintay sa management if they are going to answer that.”

When ABS-CBN first announced its collaboration with BBC to produce the local remake of “Doctor Foster” in April, Santos emerged as a popular choice among fans of the British original, as well as the hit South Korean version “The World of the Married.”

In May, Sta. Maria was introduced as the lead star of the ABS-CBN adaptation, titled “The Broken Marriage Vow.” As in the source material, Sta. Maria will portray a doctor, Dr. Jill Ilustre, whose marriage crumbles after discovering her husband is having an affair.

Joining Sta. Maria in the cast are Zanjoe Marudo as David Ilustre, the husband; and Sue Ramirez as Lexy Lucero, the mistress. Zaijan Jaranilla will play Jill and David’s only son, Gio Ilustre, who is caught between his parents’ tug of war.

“Ako, happy ako that it is Jodi who is doing ‘Doctor Foster.’ … It’s a very, very good material. It’s a good project,” Santos said.

“Ako din naman, if ever, hindi ko rin naman din siya magagawa, kasi takot nga ako lumabas, more than anything.”

Earlier in the interview on Monday, Santos explained her hesitation to accept acting projects during the coronavirus pandemic, citing, in particular, the “new normal” style of filming.

Santos was answering whether she would be open to reuniting with her erstwhile screen partner Piolo Pascual.

“I am not closing my doors to that possibility, kasi wala namang imposible, ‘di ba. Atsaka sa pagkakataong ‘to, kung kaya, bakit hindi? It’s just that, lalo ngayon, hindi ako makatanggap ng mga acting jobs, kasi natatakot ako talagang lumabas,” she said.

“The thought of bubble taping, hindi ko kaya,” Santos added, using a term for quarantined filming of productions under COVID-19 safety protocols.

ABS-CBN series, for instance, have filming cycles that last three weeks, during which the cast and crew are billeted and locked in at a taping location.

Santos mentioned her family — she has three children with her husband, TV host Ryan Agoncillo — as the primary reason she can’t commit to a bubble taping.

“Malalayo sa pamilya, eh ang liliit pa ng mga anak namin. Kung siguro dalaga’t binata na ‘tong mga ‘to, maiintindihan nila,” she said.

Italy's Eurovision rockstar winner did not take drugs -organisers

ROME (Reuters) - The lead singer of Italy’s glam rock band Maneskin, which won this year’s Eurovision song contest, has passed a drugs test proving he did not take drugs at the weekend event, the organisers said on Monday.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said it had conducted a thorough review of what happened on Saturday after some viewers thought footage showed Damiano David snorting cocaine as he waited for the winner to be announced.

He denied it and said he had merely been clearing away a broken glass under the table. Speaking to reporters on Sunday he said he was against drugs and offered to do a drugs test.

EBU said this had returned a negative result.

“No drug use took place in the Green Room and we consider the matter closed,” EBU said in a statement.

“We are alarmed that inaccurate speculation leading to fake news has overshadowed the spirit and the outcome of the event and unfairly affected the band,” it added.

The Italians’ raucous hit “Zitti E Buoni” beat out professional jury favourites Switzerland and France and swept the public vote at Saturday’s competition, which accounted for half the points.

“We wish to congratulate Maneskin once again and wish them huge success,” EBU said.
