What Is The Meaning Of Spiritual Light?

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light had dawned.  Isaiah 9:2

One of the remarkable things about life today is the fact that science knows so much about some things and so little about some other things which are very common, and we tend to take those things for granted—not sensing how very important they are to our survival.

Light is a typical example.  What is light?  You may respond, “That’s easy.  Light is….”  But then you stop and think about it, and are not sure how to finish that statement.  A definition of light from either a practical or a scientific viewpoint isn’t easy.  People once thought that light was something that traveled from a person’s eye to an object and then back again.  If anything blocked the rays from the eye, the object could not be seen.

In 1666, the English scientist Sir Isaac Newton discovered that white light is really made of many colors.  About the same time, a Dutch physicist contended that light consists of waves, and proposed a wave theory to explain the behavior of light.  Christiaan Huygens’ theory held up for about a century, but then in 1864, the English physicist James Clerk Maxwell proposed the mathematical theory of electromagnetism which became the basis of modern scientific data.

However, scientific definitions are not altogether satisfactory.  Say, for instance, if your lights go out and you find yourself in a very dark room.  You are not satisfied with a theory—you simply want a match or a candle.  Forget the theory; just get the lights on!  That’s the way many are today.  Regardless of the explanation—they just want light in a dark world.

Simply stated, light in our world falls into three categories—natural light, such as the sun, moon and stars; artificial light, which is another form of energy; and spiritual light.  The Bible has a great deal to say about light and what it does to darkness.  John, writing the introduction to his gospel, pictures Jesus Christ as the spiritual light of the world who came into a world of darkness.  John says that the true light is Jesus Christ who will give spiritual light to every man.  Christ Himself said, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

One of the most practical definitions of light is simply that it embraces the cessation of darkness.  Actually, that definition is more practical than scientific, but in simple terms, it does tell us something of the impact of Jesus Christ in the world.

As Newton discovered, when light passes through a prism, a variety of colors emerge, some brilliant and some with subdued shades in between.  Each is a particular manifestation of light.  Should I ask 100 different people, “What has Jesus Christ done for you?” and I would undoubtedly get 100 different answers.  Some would say, “He is my friend.”  Or, “he is my Lord and Savior.”  “He is the one who turned my marriage around.”  Another might say, “When doctors gave up, Jesus became my healer!”

Just a minute, you might think.  Can He be all of that and even more?  Remember the light passing through the prism?  Same light— many different manifestations. God is sufficient and able to meet you at the point of your need.

Next Binibining Pilipinas pageant set in July

After being postponed several times, the Binibining Pilipinas pageant is finally pushing through this July.

Samantha Bernardo, who was sent by the national pageant to represent the country at Miss Grand International, made the announcement during a virtual press conference by Bb. Pilipinas on Friday.

"To all our Binibini fans, stand by and mark your calendars [for the] Bb. Pilipinas grand coronation night on July 11, 2021," said Bernardo, who recently arrived in the country two months after finishing first runner-up in the pageant.

Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) earlier said that it has moved the national pageant to June 27 of this year "to safeguard the welfare of our staff and candidates" amid the surge of COVID-19 cases in the country.

The 2020 edition of Bb. Pilipinas was originally set on May 31 last year, before it was indefinitely postponed due to the pandemic.

It was then re-scheduled to April 17, 2021.

Gozon touts win over ABS-CBN as investors flock to GMA

GMA Network Inc. chair and CEO Felipe Gozon on Wednesday revived a ratings war with rival ABS-CBN Corp. amid a wave of interest from investors after GMA became the country’s dominant television broadcaster by default.

During the firm’s annual shareholders meeting, Gozon touted GMA’s superior TV ratings after ABS-CBN’s broadcast business was shuttered by the Duterte administration on May 5, 2020.

This was followed by the denial of ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise by President Duterte’s allies in Congress in July, shocking free speech advocates and resulting in thousands of layoffs at the media giant.

“We were already ahead of ABS-CBN in both reach and viewership before the latter went off the air in May,” said Gozon, who previously declined to comment on their competitor’s shutdown.

He said GMA remained the No. 1 television station in the country and that ABS-CBN’s return to free TV through airtime leasing deals had little impact on their earnings.

Leadership in TV ratings has been a contested area for years between the two rivals. GMA relies on data from AGB Nielsen, which shows it ahead, while ABS-CBN uses Kantar, which says it is leading GMA.

But beyond business one-upmanship with ABS-CBN, which continues to air online and via pay TV, analysts said GMA had now captured the spotlight from investors seeking a share from the windfall in the multibillion peso advertising industry.

GMA’s share price had soared 50 percent so far this year while the benchmark stock exchange index had declined. On Tuesday, it paid stockholders a historic high cash dividend of P1.35 per share.

Bets are now flowing into the company as investors expect a boom in political advertising ahead of the 2022 presidential elections.

“I’ve had inquiries from a few investors, just out of the blue, who are interested in GMA,” Joseph Roxas, president of Eagle Equities Inc., told the Inquirer.

“They had a big dividend so people are asking if they can sustain this,” he added.

Luis Gerardo Limlingan, managing director at Regina Capital Development, said they currently have a “buy” rating on GMA.

“GMA7 wasn’t as heavily traded before as it is nowadays,” he said. “Back then, the flow of advertising revenue was split almost equally across the networks. Now, it’s most as advertisers will go directly to GMA.”

Pointing to rosy prospects, Gozon said on Wednesday earnings in 2021 could grow by around 15 percent after profit jumped 128 percent to P6 billion the previous year.

First quarter earnings this year hit P2.02 billion, up 246 percent, as revenues grew 55 percent to P5.46 billion.

While advertising makes up the bulk of earnings, GMA last year launched its digital television business through the GMA Affordabox, creating a new source of revenue.

Moreover, the company is setting aside P20 billion until 2023, which will finance the expansion of digital TV, the construction of state-of-the-art studios within its Quezon City headquarters and content acquisition.

For 2021 alone, GMA planned to launch 100 new programs produced internally as well as foreign content, Gozon said.
