Why Is Lying Harmful?
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. Revelation 21:8
When a certain worker got too much money in his paycheck, he said nothing, thinking that he had indeed encountered some good luck. The comptroller, however, found his mistake and deducted the overpayment from the next check. This time, however, the worker loudly complained, “You made a mistake; you didn’t pay me enough money.” The comptroller said, “Look, last pay check, I overpaid you, and you didn’t say anything then. Now, why do you complain when I deducted the amount of the overpayment?” Embarrassed, the worker began to blush and replied, “Look, I can overlook one mistake, but with two mistakes I had to say something.”
Trying to save face is one thing, but saying things which maliciously hurt another person is quite another matter. If there is one thing that the Bible makes clear it is that God hates the individual who lies in a deliberate, pre-meditated attempt to defraud another person. Does it happen? Read the news. Listen to the testimonies of individuals who end up in court. Both individuals can’t be telling the truth.
Nearly 3,000 years ago, Solomon, who one time heard two women both saying, “This child is mine!” wrote, “There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him….” (See Proverbs 6:16-19). The second in this infamous list is “a lying tongue,” and the sixth is “a false witness who pours out lies.” The first disclaimer speaks of those who have made dishonesty a lifestyle. The second speaks of the one who lies about another person, usually resulting in personal gain. His lie is a deliberate attempt to hurt another person.
We usually commit this wrong by what we say, but we can do it by what we don’t say. Years ago the captain of a ship became a bitter enemy of the first mate, and he wanted him fired. He knew that the owner of the ship would never dismiss the first mate simply because he didn’t like him. There had to be justification, a cause for dismissal. He couldn’t say that the man was irresponsible or didn’t do his work properly so he decided to subtly undermine the man’s character.
Every morning the captain would write an entry in the ship’s log, and he began to make notations such as, “This first mate is sober today.” Or, “I am pleased that the first mate is not drunk today.” This practice continued week in and week out so that it appeared that most of the time the first mate was so inebriated that he could not properly fulfill his duties. Actually, the first mate was never drunk, but the one who read the log wouldn’t have thought that.
The owner of the ship read the log and almost dismissed the first mate, and then the truth came out.
When you know that a person’s character is being assailed, and you keep silent, you are almost as guilty as the one whose untruths become deadly arrows. Lying for personal gain is a common practice in offices, in corporations, in courtrooms, and in churches as well.
No matter how often it happens, it is a practice which God abhors, and those who practice this form of character assassination will not go guiltless or unpunished.
At times we lose perspective and think that getting ahead is the only thing that counts. Forget it, friend. Sooner or later, we stand in the presence of the Almighty and we will receive the due recompense of what we have done. God has His payday someday.

NBA: Clippers close out Mavs to advance, face Clarkson’s Jazz next
Kawhi Leonard scored 28 points with 10 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers used a balanced attack to defeat the Dallas Mavericks 126-111 on Sunday in Game 7 of their NBA first-round playoff series.
Marcus Morris Sr. scored 23 points and Paul George added 22 points with 10 assists as the fourth-seeded Clippers advanced to the second round to face Jordan Clarkson and the Utah Jazz.
Los Angeles became the sixth team in NBA history to lose the first two games of a series at home and still advance.
Sunday's game was the first time in the series the home team came out with the victory. It was the first time in NBA history the road team won the first six games of a playoff series.
Luka Doncic scored 46 points with 14 assists in his first career Game 7 of a playoff series but was unable to carry the Mavericks across the finish line. Dallas lost to the Clippers in the first round for the second consecutive season.
Dorian Finney-Smith scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and Kristaps Porzingis added 16 points with 11 rebounds for the Mavericks, who had two chances to close out the series. They lost at home 104-97 in Game 6 on Friday.
Trailing 81-76 with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter, the Clippers went on a 21-2 run to take a 97-83 lead, pushing the advantage to double digits for the first time in the game. They closed out the third quarter on an overall 24-4 run to take a 100-85 advantage.
Doncic was intent on getting to the second round when he scored 29 points in the first half on 10-of-14 shooting, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. But he had just six points in the decisive third quarter and did not make any of his 3-point attempts.
The Clippers pushed their advantage to as many as 19 at 106-87 with 9:20 remaining on a pair of Leonard free throws. The Mavericks made one last run, getting to within seven at 114-107 with 2:06 to play on a Doncic step-back 3-pointer.
But Reggie Jackson answered with a 3-pointer for a 117-107 lead and the Clippers finished off the game and series from there.
Jackson scored 15 points, while Terance Mann added 13 for the Clippers, who shot 50 percent from the field (41 of 82). Nicolas Batum and Luke Kennard added 11 points each.
Boban Marjanovic scored 14 points for the Mavericks with 10 rebounds, while Tim Hardaway Jr. had 11 points.

NBA: Trae, hot-shooting Hawks survive 76ers late for Game 1 upset
Trae Young had 35 points and 10 assists and the fifth-seeded Atlanta Hawks upset the top-seeded and host Philadelphia 76ers 128-124 in the opening game of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Sunday afternoon.
John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 21 each and Kevin Huerter had 15 for the Hawks, who are competing in this playoff round for the first time in five years. Clint Capela also had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Game 2 will be Tuesday night at Philadelphia.
Joel Embiid had been questionable to play with a small lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, but he finished with 39 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in 38 minutes.
Seth Curry added 21 points, Tobias Harris had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Simmons chipped in with 17 points and 10 assists for the Sixers.
Atlanta made 20 of 47 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Hawks played without De'Andre Hunter, who sat out with right knee soreness.
The Hawks jumped out to a 42-27 lead at the end of the first quarter. They opened the second on a torrid pace as well and extended the advantage to 53-27 after a 3-pointer by Bogdanovic capped a 17-0 run.
Atlanta led 74-54 at halftime thanks in large part to Young's 25 points.
Embiid paced the Sixers with 17. But they looked sloppy and disjointed on offense throughout and committed 12 turnovers in the first half.
The Sixers came out aggressive in the third and when Danny Green secured an offensive rebound and scored, they pulled within 79-64 with 8:44 left.
But the Hawks responded with a 10-0 spurt to go back ahead by 25.
After the Sixers cut the deficit to 14, Collins came back with a three-point play as the Hawks moved ahead 105-88 with 9:07 remaining.
Philadelphia managed to close within 118-111 with 1:41 to go after Curry dropped in a 3-pointer from the corner.
Embiid scored on the next two possessions and the deficit was suddenly three.
Bogdanovic then hit a trey and the Hawks moved back ahead by six.
The Sixers got within two in the waning seconds after a steal and dunk by Simmons before Bogdanovic made two free throws with 8.9 seconds left to seal it.

WATCH: Yuka Saso with the winning shot for the US Women's Open title
Yuka Saso of the Philippines made history on Sunday by winning the US Women's Open title, the biggest feat in Philippine golf history.
ABS-CBN News North America Bureau head TJ Manotoc was at The Olympic Club Lake Course in San Francisco, Calif., to witness the triumph.
Here Saso, 19 years old, makes the winning putt.
Saso sank a birdie putt on the third playoff hole to outduel Nasa Hataoka and win the U.S. Women's Open on Sunday in San Francisco.
The 19-year-old Saso shot a 2-over 73 to finish at 4-under 280 on the Lake Course at Olympic Club on a day in which American Lexi Thompson shot 4-over 75 and suffered through an epic back-nine collapse. Saso is the first golfer from the Philippines to win the prestigious title.
She also matched Inbee Park as the youngest golfers (19 years, 11 months, 17 days) to win the U.S. Women's Open. Park won her first U.S. Open in 2008.
Saso said she didn't dare dream about winning the biggest tournament in women's golf.
"Not really. I wasn't thinking that," Saso said on the Golf Channel. "I was just glad and thankful that I was here and able to play in this tournament. Yeah, it's unbelievable."
Saso entered the final round trailing third-round leader Thompson by one stroke and her day started badly with back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3.
"I was actually upset," Saso said after her third career victory. "My caddie talked to me and was like there's still many holes to go so keep doing what I was doing the last few days and trust the process." — With a report from Field Level Media/Reuters
History! Yuka Saso of the Philippines crowned US Women’s Open golf champion

SAN FRANCISCO - (UPDATED) Yuka Saso bounced back from two early double bogeys and bested Japan's Nasa Hataoka in the third hole of a sudden death playoff to win the 76th U.S. Women's Open golf championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco on Sunday.
The 19-year-old Saso became the first Filipino player to win a golf major and announced herself as a new force in the game with her first major title.
Saso pumped her first and smiled after nailing a 10-foot birdie putt for the win after overcoming the early adversity on a picture-perfect day at the Lake Course.
"I was actually upset," she said about the two double bogeys in her first three holes, which seemed to doom her chances.
"My caddie talked to me and said there are still many holes to go and to keep doing what I've been doing the past few days," she said.
"And to trust the process."
All week Saso enjoyed the vocal support of fans from nearby Daly City, which is home to a large Filipino population.
Saso, who earlier in the tournament revealed she tried to emulate four-time men's major champion Rory McIlroy's swing, received encouragement from the Northern Irishman on social media on Sunday, which she said gave her a boost.
"Rory said, 'Get that trophy,' and I did. So thank you, Rory," she said with a laugh.
At 19 years, 11 months and 17 days, Saso matched South Korea's Park Inbee to the day as the youngest champion at the women's game's oldest major.
Saso had to survive a late charge by Hataoka, who was seeking to become the latest Japanese major winner after Hideki Matsuyama triumphed at the Masters earlier this year.
After starting the day six strokes off the lead, Hataoka stormed from behind with three birdies on her last six holes but could only manage pars on the three playoff holes and could only watch on as Saso sank the winning shot.
HEARTBREAK FOR THOMPSON
The playoff came after American Lexi Thompson, who led by four strokes at the turn, suffered a heartbreaking collapse on the back nine.
Thompson, 26, had her elusive second major title in sight but lost her accuracy off the tee on the back nine and missed crucial putts on 17 as well as one on 18 that would have seen her into the playoff.
The popular American, who was playing in her 15th U.S. Women's Open, could only manage a disappointing four-over 75 on Sunday.
Thompson, who on Saturday said she had been working on taking a more positive mindset to the game, said it was hard to smile but added that it was "an amazing week."
"I played not so well today with a few of the bogeys coming in on the back nine, but the fans were unbelievable, hearing the chants, it gives me a reason to play," she said.
"I'll take today and I'll learn from it."
The 76th edition of the U.S. Women's Open marked the first time that it has been played at the hilly and challenging Olympic Club, the oceanside course that has hosted five men's U.S. Opens.
Next year's tournament will be played at Pine Needles Golf Club in North Carolina before it returns to California at Pebble Beach in 2023.

Tennis: Federer withdraws from French Open with Wimbledon in mind
Julien Pretot, Reuters
PARIS - Former world number one Roger Federer, who is targeting a record 21st Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, withdrew from the French Open on Sunday, a day after winning a tough third-round match, opting to save himself for the grass-court season.
"After discussions with my team, I decided that I should withdraw from the French Open today," Federer said in a statement released by the French Tennis Federation.
"After two knee operations and more than a year of rehabilitation, it's important that I listen to my body and not rush back into competition," the 39-year-old Swiss added.
Federer, who has hardly played in the last 17 months because of a knee injury, suffered physically in his four-set, late-night victory over German Dominik Koepfer on Saturday and decided to end his Roland Garros campaign ahead of what would have been a punishing fourth-round match against Italian Matteo Berrettini.
He had said after Saturday's match that he was pondering whether to participate in the second week of the claycourt Grand Slam as his season goal was Wimbledon, the grass-court major starting on June 28.
"We go through these matches... we analyse them highly and look on what's next and we'll do the same tonight and tomorrow," he said.
"Because I need to decide if I keep on playing or not, or is it not too much risk at this moment to keep pushing or is this just a perfect way to just take a rest."
Tournament director Guy Forget said: "The French Open is sorry to see Roger Federer withdraw from the tournament but he put up a great fight last night.
"We were all delighted to see him back in Paris, where he played three top-level matches. We wish him all the best for the rest of the season."
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander said Federer's decision made sense as the eight-time Wimbledon champion had more chance to succeed on grass.
"It proves that it’s a long-term project for him to come back. For me, that’s good news because it shows he’s going to be around for a bit longer," Wilander, a tennis expert for Eurosport, said.
"Obviously, he got the matches that he needed and he wanted. The main period for him over the years is the grass-court season –- he obviously enjoys all the Grand Slams and different surfaces but grass comes so naturally to him and that’s where he has had the most success.
"So, yes, obviously perfect for him. I think it’s absolutely perfect preparation." (Editing by Clare Fallon)
