VisMin Cup: KCS-Mandaue now a win away from Visayas leg crown

Shaq Imperial came to the rescue and lifted KCS Computer Specialist-Mandaue past MJAS Zenith-Talisay City, 67-66, in Game One of the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup-Visayas Leg finals, Friday at the Alcantara Civic Center in Cebu.

Imperial triggered the long-range bomber with 40 seconds to go and saved Mandaue from defeat after his team squandered an 11-point lead.

It was MJAS' first defeat after a 10-game sweep of the elimination round, which included two victories over KCS that had an average margin of 14.0 points a game.

KCS assistant coach Vince Urot said he and the rest of the team weren’t surprised by Imperial’s clutch.

“He always comes up big when his number is called,” said Urot. “We all know him from his CESAFI days. He is not afraid to take those big shots in the grandest stage.”

Imperial, the reigning CESAFI MVP, led Mandaue with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Gryann Mendoza added 15 points, 11 coming in the fourth when Mandaue threatened to blow the game wide open as they took a 62-51 lead, with 5:40 left.

Ping Exciminiano added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals on top of playing incredible defense on Talisay’s cadre of perimeter threats.

“Defense is our main calling card from the start of the season,” said Urot. “Coach Mike (Reyes) really wants to focus on the defensive side, Alam naman natin gaano kagaling ang Talisay sa offense. It was just all effort and hardwork sa defense.”

Talisay, though, refused to give up and uncorked 11 straight points—sparked by a couple of triples by Patrick Cabahug—to tie things up at 62-all.

However, they just could not get over the hump late in the game.

6 Questions About Worry

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.  Psalm 37:4-5, ESV

Some have called it the “acceptable sin of the saints” since almost everyone does it, and few really label it what it is–sin.  And what is this wrong which we label “acceptable”?  It’s worry!  And we ignore and justify doing it.  “I just can’t help it–it’s my nature!”  Besides, we justify, there is a great deal of difference between anxiety–justified concern–and real worry.  Perhaps!  But, I for one, am never sure when I’ve crossed that line and have allowed my sleep to be taken from me as I wrestle with issues when I’m praying about it, but worrying about it at the same time.

When you struggle with this issue, may I suggest a checklist–a series of questions which you must face.

Question #1:  Am I praying about this situation, giving thanks to God that He is bigger than my problem?  Corrie ten Boom was a woman who, in her war experiences, had legitimate things to worry about such as, “Will I ever come out of Ravensbruck concentration camp alive?” In her book, Each New Day, Corrie wrote, “When I worry I go to the mirror and say to myself, ‘This tremendous thing which is worrying me is beyond a solution.  It is especially too hard for Jesus Christ to handle.’ After I have said that, I smile and I am ashamed.”

Question #2:  Am I allowing this worry to choke God’s Word in my heart?  In the parable about the sower and the seed, Jesus said that the worries of life “choke the word, making it unfruitful” (Mark 4:19).  Worry becomes our master, causing us to forget what God has promised, what He is honor-bound in His own time.

Question #3:  Do I really believe God is in control of my life, or am I living with a false sense of security?  Our actions really answer that question.  Mark Twain, a man never noted for his religious convictions, once wrote, “I am an old man and have known many troubles, but most of them never happened.”  The child of God can live with the conviction that God is able to spare us from situations or else confront us with them, depending on His sovereign will.  But in either situation, He is with us no matter what happens so we can live without worry.

Question #4:  Would this worry disappear if I took time to sit at Jesus’ feet as did Mary?  Take time to review that story found in Luke 10, and notice in particular Jesus’ advice to Martha, who said, “Martha, Martha…you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed” (Luke 10:41), and that one thing was to be in His presence.  Put your name in there and hear Him say, “You… are worried and upset about many things, but being in my presence is the answer to your care.”

Question #5:  Have I, by an act of my will, laid this worry at the feet of Him who said, ” Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, ESV)?

Question #6:  Is what worries me really worth the effort in light of all eternity?

A final thought:  OK, everybody does it, but what can be done about it?  Recognize worry for what it is: sin.  Confess it and stop doing it.  Identify your worries, and tell God about them, letting Him know how you feel as well as what causes your concern. Having prayed about it, strive to leave it with Him and turn off the light and let Him take the night shift.

NBA: Anthony Davis could miss Lakers' crucial game vs. Blazers

The slumping Los Angeles Lakers could be without both LeBron James and Anthony Davis when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers in Friday's crucial Western Conference contest.

James will miss his third straight game due to an aggravated ankle injury, while Davis left Thursday night's 118-94 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers due to back spasms. Davis indicated that an apparent right ankle injury won't be an issue and that his availability will depend on his back.

"The ankle is fine. It wasn't bothering me," Davis said after the Lakers lost for the seventh time in the past nine games. "The back locked up pretty bad. It's a little bit better now, we'll see how it is tomorrow. ... We'll test it out but my plan is to play."

Missing both players would be poor timing for the Lakers, who share the same 37-29 record as the Trail Blazers. Friday's winner will claim the tiebreaker edge in the three-game season series. Los Angeles enters the game in the sixth spot in the Western Conference due to having a better conference record.

The loser of Friday's game will fall into sole possession of seventh place with five games remaining. The top six finishers avoid the play-in round while the No. 7 through 10 seeds will participate in it.

Davis first was injured in the opening minutes Thursday after missing a 3-pointer. He backpedaled into signage near the sideline and fell to the court and grabbed his right ankle. He exited later in the first quarter and didn't return, with the Lakers announcing Davis was dealing with back spasms.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel said the club will examine Davis on Friday before making a decision.

"We got to follow the lead with the medical team," Vogel said. "We got to make the best decision for his health."

The Lakers will also be without guard Dennis Schroder (health and safety protocols) for the fourth straight contest.

The Trail Blazers are hot after completing a 5-1 road trip. The victories were by an average of 21.4 points and the excursion ended with Wednesday's 141-105 trouncing of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"We're playing our best at the right time," star point guard Damian Lillard said. "We've had our ups and downs, but the feeling around our team is much better now. We were kind of searching for a while, but everything just clicked and came together."

Friday's game will be the first time Portland has played in front of home fans this season.

The Oregon Health Authority approved a 10 percent capacity, meaning roughly 1,900 fans will be in attendance. It will be the first time since March 10, 2020, that the Trail Blazers will have fans in the Moda Center due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I think everybody is excited about it," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "I think we're one of the last, if not the last team, to have fans. They make a difference. We've been out on the road, we've seen fans on the road for a while now. It's going to be nice to come back Friday night against the Lakers and see people in the stands."

Lillard has scored at least 32 points in three of the past four games. He is a stellar 23 of 43 from 3-point range during the stretch.

Lillard averaged 33 points as the Trail Blazers split the two earlier meetings with the Lakers. Davis missed the second contest (Feb. 26) due to a calf injury.

PBA gets green light from IATF to hold 5-on-5 scrimmages

It looks like the league might get its wish to stage live games in June.

This after the PBA got a nod of approval from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases to hold 5-on-5 scrimmages in venues located in general community quarantine or modified GCQ areas.

It is a welcome development for the league which is planning to kick off its 46th season this June.

"We're looking at a month of practices. Mid-June baka pwede na tayo mag-start ng season. And yes, we're still on target for a two-conference calendar for Season 46," said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial in the league's official website.

"May mga ika-clarify pa tayo sa approval. May mga aalamin pa tayo, pero nagpapasalamat na tayo ngayon pa lang sa approval," added Marcial.

Next step for the PBA chieftain is to meet with Games and Amusements Board chairman Baham Mitra for the protocols for the conduct of the practices.

Marcial vowed that the league will make sure that the teams down to its staff will follow every protocol needed to prevent any incidence of COVID cases in the training facility.

"Mas hihigpitan pa natin. Seven days and two days before practice, kailangan swab test. At dati every 14 days ang testing; gagawin natin ngayon every 10 days," said Marcial.

Marcial and his staff visited Batangas City to inspect three gymnasiums.

They are cleared to hold scrimmages at the Batangas City Coliseum, Batangas State University Gym, and the Lyceum-Batangas Gym.

Some other teams plan to train in Ilocos in the North just to ensure safety from the virus.

IATF approves PH hosting of FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark

Karl Cedrick Basco, ABS-CBN News

The government has given the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) the green light to host the third window of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark, Pampanga in June.

In a resolution, the Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases approved the request of SBP for a “bubble-type” setting of the continental qualifiers in Pampanga where the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) conducted its All-Filipino Cup bubble.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque also relayed the development, highlighting the strict health protocols to be implemented during the competition.

The SBP expressed its gratitude to the IATF for the go signal they received in conducting the qualifiers from June 16 to 20.

“We extend our appreciation to PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez and Deputy Chief Implementer of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 Vince Dizon for all their help throughout this process,” SBP said.

The local organization also assured the government of proper coordination with FIBA and other partners to ensure the success and safety of the bubble.

“We’re looking forward to hosting our friends from Groups A, B, and C and showing them the kind of hospitality that the Philippines is known for,” it stated.

SBP also dedicated the international competition to the Filipino fans, who are known for their love for the sport.

“The SBP knows that Filipino basketball fans have waited a long time for this and we’re just as excited as they are to have international basketball in our country again.”

The IATF has also allowed the practices and scrimmages of the PBA in areas under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) and Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ).

The third window has been delayed twice this year, after the Philippines withdrew from hosting last February because of the travel restrictions imposed by the government amid the rising number of COVID-19 infections.

It was moved to Doha, Qatar only to be cancelled anew as the country also saw a spike in coronavirus cases.

The Philippines joined South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia for Group A in the qualifiers. Group B, on the other hand, is composed of China, Japan, Malaysia, and Chinese-Taipei.

Australia, New Zealand, Guam, and Hong Kong are in Group C.

Anti-Olympics petition receives over 200,000 signatures in 2 days

A Japanese online petition calling for the cancellation of this summer's Tokyo Olympics had received over 200,000 signatures as of Friday, just 2 days after its launch, as public fears over the coronavirus pandemic grow with the rapid spread of highly contagious variants.

The petition addressed to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and other representatives of organizers, said the games should not be held to protect people's lives amid the global health crisis.

"With the circumstances that we are under, it is certainly unlikely that the Tokyo Olympics could be held safely," said the English version of the Change.org petition launched Wednesday noon by lawyer Kenji Utsunomiya, who has run multiple times for the Tokyo governorship.

"The lack of medical resources that Tokyo and the rest of Japan is suffering from should suggest just how much the games will cause danger and fear to health care workers, citizens, and participants," it said.

With less than 3 months until the opening of the Olympics, Tokyo is currently under a COVID-19 state of emergency, which is set to be extended later Friday beyond its May 11 end date in an attempt to curb infections and ease the strain on hospitals.

Utsunomiya said on Twitter that he planned to collect the signatures before Bach's scheduled visit to Japan for an Olympic torch relay event on May 17 and meeting with Suga the next day.

Bach and the Japanese organizing committee have both said it is possible to hold the Olympics and Paralympics safely. But media polls have constantly shown that a large majority of people in Japan oppose holding the games this summer following a 1-year postponement.

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike and Sebastian Coe, World Athletics president, held a meeting in the Japanese capital, during which they reaffirmed their cooperation in the run-up to the Olympics.

While voicing understanding for people in Japan who are worried about the major sporting event, Coe said he will continue working with the host city so the games can deliver hope during this difficult time.

Coe, who led the organizing body of the 2012 London Olympics, watched a marathon test event in Sapporo on Wednesday. At the time, Coe said his visit was intended to show his organization's support for the Tokyo Games.

On Thursday, the IOC said it will provide athletes attending the Olympics and Paralympics with free doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE.

Meanwhile, Japan's vaccine rollout, which has been criticized as too slow, only began for those aged 65 and over last month, and it will be impossible for much of the general public to be inoculated by the start of the Olympics on July 23.

The Olympics and Paralympics are expected to involve about 15,000 athletes.

NBA: Balanced scoring leads Pistons past Grizzlies

Cory Joseph engineered a balanced attack with 18 points and 11 assists and the host Detroit Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 111-97 on Thursday.

Wayne Ellington also scored 18 points, all on 3-pointers. A handful of other Pistons reached double digits.

Isaiah Stewart had 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and Sekou Doumbouya supplied 14 points and six rebounds.

Jahlil Okafor and Saddiq Bey chipped in 13 points apiece and Frank Jackson added 11.

Detroit (20-47) shot 53 percent from the field, while Memphis shot 42.7 percent.

Ja Morant's 20 points led the Grizzlies (33-33) but he also had five turnovers. Jonas Valanciunas had 19 points and secured 16 rebounds, and Jaren Jackson Jr. had 17 points with five rebounds. John Konchar contributed 11 points and Brandon Clarke tossed in 10.

The Pistons had three players in double figures by halftime as they grabbed a 58-49 lead. Ellington knocked down four 3-pointers as Detroit shot 55.8 percent from the field.

Morant's 12 points topped the Grizzlies, who shot 41.2 percent during the half.

A Joseph layup early in the third quarter gave Detroit a 10-point advantage.

The Grizzlies chipped away and whittled Detroit's lead to two points, but the Pistons responded with a 7-0 spurt. Joseph capped it with a shot in the lane to make it 73-64.

Detroit led by eight, 78-70, at the start of the fourth quarter.

Clarke drained a 3-pointer with seven minutes left to cut the Pistons' lead to two points, 89-87.

An 8-1 Pistons run stretched the lead to nine, 99-90. Jackson made four free throws during that span.

When Joseph fed Bey for a 3-pointer from the wing, Detroit's lead was up to 10 again at 104-94. Doumbouya finished off the Grizzlies with a steal and dunk in the final minute.

The Grizzlies were coming off a 139-135 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. They defeated the Pistons in Memphis 109-95 on Feb. 19.

'One of the best, kindest, most talented': Chai Fonacier praises 'Nocebo' co-star Eva Green

Filipino actress Chai Fonacier took to social media to praise French actress Eva Green, her co-star in the upcoming psychological thriller film "Nocebo."

In an Instagram post, Fonacier shared her appreciation post for Green, who is known for her Hollywood projects like "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," "Sin City," and "Dumbo."

"Took a long time for this post. Because most of the time I have words for my experiences, and I always want to have nicely structured captions for everything. And I kept thinking about it, but then I gave up because how can one make a post that encompasses her? I can't. One can't," she said.

"There are many things I could say about her -- all of them good -- but then it would shatter part of the wonderful sense of mystery she holds over all of us," she added. "So I'll leave it that, while being utterly, utterly truthful about it: she is among the best, kindest, most talented people I have ever worked with."

Fonacier went on to thank Green "for gracing us with your presence, your intensity, passion, your art, and the beauty of your being."

"Grateful to be a witness to this awesomeness. Won't ever forget you, and I hope to see you again. Love you!" she ended.

Fonacier's post came a month after Green lauded her via Instagram for being "truly a great actress."

In "Nocebo," Fonacier plays a Filipino caregiver who uses folk medicine to help the character of Green, a fashion designer battling a mysterious illness.

Directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Garret Shanley, the film also stars Hollywood A-lister Mark Strong. It marks the first co-production between Ireland and the Philippines.

Lawmakers push for ABS-CBN’s return on air

Proponents of ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal in Congress yesterday vowed continued support for the return of the network giant on air.

Deputy Speaker and Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza and members of the Makabayan bloc expressed hope that the network giant would return on air a year after losing its franchise.

“I believe the ABS-CBN issue will once again rise up and it is certain that the network will open up and one day come back on air,” Atienza stressed in a statement.

The House leader insisted that “one of the greatest injustices in Philippine governance and Philippine history is the closure of a responsible media network.”

“The shutdown of ABS-CBN was clearly a mistrial and a total misdelivery of justice. But you can never put a good network down. The network was accused of allegedly violating laws, including the Constitution. But nothing was proven,” he declared.

“After a lengthy 13 hearings of the franchise committee and after all resource persons presented their side, none of the accusations were proven, and yet their conclusion was still guilty,” Atienza lamented.

Makabayan lawmakers agreed with Atienza and again accused the Duterte administration of being behind the network’s closure.

“Duterte placed on the edge of a precipice 11,000 jobs in the middle of a raging pandemic and a worsening economy,” Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Ferdie Gaite alleged.

“Duterte might have won that battle against press freedom a year ago, but the war is far from over. We continue to stand with ABS-CBN workers, we continue to stand for press freedom and democracy. We will not be tired of supporting the battle of ABS-CBN workers to return to their jobs. We will continue to fight for them in Congress,” Gaite assured.

ABS-CBN went off air on May 5 last year after its 25-year franchise lapsed.

The House legislative franchises panel then voted 70-11 in July to reject the application for franchise renewal of ABS-CBN due to “numerous violations” of franchise and related laws committed by the network.

The country would keep GMA as the sole TV network.

The ABS-CBN franchise renewal bills were refiled last January, but the House leadership deemed it best to leave the matter to the next Congress to resolve.
