The Philippines’ Largest Network GMA should be decisions to reverted back into “Rainbow Network” branding with the returned of the 1995 logo and slogan for the network’s new millennium.

All GMA-7’s national programming were permanently switched it’s broadcasting from 4:3 aspect ratio Standard Definition Television (SDTV) into 16:9 1080p High Definition Television (HDTV) for better quality picture, and also, GMA’s Transmitter will decided to downgrading their Effective Radiated Power (ERP) of 500,000 watts (though the TPO of 100,000 watts is the strongest state-of-the-art transmitter power output since GMA-7 was inaugurated a new 777-ft. During sign-on and sign-off notices, GMA would be decided to stop producing national anthem music video produced by the Network itself to be replaced by the 16:9 4K UHD Digitally Restored and Remastered of Philippine National Anthem 1994 version produced by BPI to be aired on GMA-7 and GTV-27.

Why Do I Need God?

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  Jeremiah 29:13

“I don’t need God; I can handle things myself!”  Occasionally I am confronted with those words.  “Really?” I often say, giving me a moment to think before I respond.  Though I’ve never actually said it, “I’ve often wanted to respond: “You are a most unusual individual.  In fact, you are so rare a specimen that you should be the subject of study by the scientists of our day, and certainly, the theologians, who need to know how someone can be so secure, so confident of himself or herself, so absolute.  They need to know what makes you different from all the other creatures which fill the churches of the world, who pray to the Almighty, who christen babies and bury their dead with the hope of eternity.”

I would be particularly interested in knowing where and how you find strength when the doctor says, “I have to tell you we have done everything that medical science can do.  If you know how to pray, you’d better do it now.”  I’d like to know whom you turn to when you have laid the body of your mate in the cold ground and heard someone intone, “Dust to dust and ashes to ashes.”  How do you handle the difficulties of life, especially those which strike closest to your heart and home?

The person who boasts he or she has no need of God is not one to be studied but one to be pitied, because that person has a need—not much different from that of someone with an undiagnosed cancer—which is neither acknowledged nor confronted.  You who feel that way have a blind spot in your thinking.  The issue is not really whether you can get through life without God—many people do—but how much richer and fuller your life could be with God.

The fact is that you were made by God and for God.  Within every heart is a God-shaped vacuum, as Rene Pascal described it, which can only be filled by the Almighty.  Long ago, Augustine acknowledged this need, saying, “Thou has made us for thyself, O God, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”

It is the God-connection which gives meaning and purpose to an otherwise often irrational existence.  It is the certainty that there is an Almighty who is not disinterested in what happens to His children, which allows us to face the disasters of life, and to stand before an open grave with the certainty that dust to dust and ashes to ashes was not spoken of the soul.

But belief in God is not a crutch which gets you by the tough times of life, like death and dying.  It involves a relationship with God which adds a third dimension to all of life—to marriage, to existence, to how you treat others—reflecting a value system that holds life itself.  It is sacred.

A faithful dog is a wonderful companion who may show affection and warmth, but an animal with no knowledge of God cannot express the comfort of one who can hold your hand and say, “We’ll be together for all eternity.”

Here is the bottom line: We have no need of God if there is no life after death—no heaven or no hell.  But if one has come back from the other side, and there is no question that he or she has been there, then suddenly, everything changes.  If the resurrection of Jesus Christ was a fraud, if no one has ever glimpsed the other side as he or she lay dying, then, perhaps, friend, it’s OK to live without God.  But if God exists on the other side, you can’t afford to live without Him on this side.  Think about it. On which side is your confidence?

PAANO BA MAGING PROPETA SA PANAHON NGAYON? Kape't Pandasal kasama si Fr ...

Delta, Lambda – here come the Greeks!

‘NOW COME THE GREEK-LETTERED CORONAVIRUS VARIANTS, CAUSING FAR MORE DAMAGE TO SOCIETY THAN ANY GREEK-LETTERED FRATERNITY CAN EVER CAUSE.’

I WAS a barbarian all my life in UP. Was invited a few times to join fraternities, especially when I was in Pol Sci and in Law school, but I always declined. Some of my classmates and batchmates had joined fraternities as early as high school and most have remained happily part of their Greek-letter brotherhoods, able to maximize the vast network being part of a frat provides.

But yes, a few have also found their undoing in the fraternities. Some ended up in the penitentiary for homicide committed during initiation rites, and one very good UP Elem friend even died in Muntinlupa of cancer while serving a life sentence for the death of a neophyte, who happened to be the younger brother of another batchmate.

While my father joined one at the UP College of Medicine, he neither encouraged nor discouraged us from doing so. But I never had the courage to do so, so I chose to rely on the brotherhood of barbarians that has served me well over the years. In some respects it ain’t as strongly bonded as the Greek letter guys, but in other respects, because it’s a brotherhood of friends you selected yourself, you’re spared having to tolerate someone you dislike just because he is a Greek letter fraternity brother.

It was a frat man who told me that in the frat you can find the most valuable brotherhood as well as your most rabid rival, even enemy.

Now come the Greek-lettered coronavirus variants, causing far more damage to society than any Greek-lettered fraternity can ever cause. (Some might disagree?). First, it was Delta – a variant that appeared in India that has turned out to be far more infectious (though not necessarily more deadly) than the original (Aloha) variant that came from China. The Delta variant is not the dominant variant on the new spike of cases in the UK and is also spreading in many other countries, including the United States. Here in the Philippines we were told over and over again by our Health authorities that we have kept Delta out of our shores; today we find out there have been more than 10 known cases already – which means how many really are out there is anyone’s guess.

And then there’s Lambda, which has new mutations of the spike protein that is used to attach to what they call the ACE2 receptors in our cells. Apparently, it has two new spike proteins, one of which is similar to the Delta variant. These spike proteins were the target of the messenger RNA vaccines (Pfizer Biontech and Moderna), which leaves me wondering whether Lambda could therefore escape Pfizer or Moderna-induced antibodies.

That the virus mutates is not surprising; that’s what a virus does (the colds virus is one example) in order to keep on living. But the COVID virus is able to mutate because a whole lot of people remain unvaccinated, while some of those who already are vaccinated with at least one jab are already letting their guard down. Which can be fatal.

Years ago, on campus, one Greek-letter fraternity I know would alert its members of an impending rumble with another fraternity by the blowing of a car horn according to a certain pattern. That would send my classmates from that frat scampering out of our classrooms and out of our building in order to get to safety.

Unfortunately, we don’t have as “efficient” a warning system for the Greek-letter COVID variants that could send us scampering for safety. So this only means that every day, vaccinated or not, we must remain on the highest alert because the “enemy” is out there waiting to pounce on us when it has a chance.

Let’s not get lured into the COVID initiation rites, shall we? I definitely don’t want to go through the process all over again!

Personal: Happy birthday Tatski Oriate; Grace Morales; Diane Cristobal; Rev. Fr. Paul de Leon, Rev. Fr. Mario Holmina, OSJ
