David Chua: In the right place at the right time

David Chua is a hardworking man who is fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

The 32-year-old actor, director and producer was in Donsol, Sorsogon, to shoot an advocacy campaign video when he guested on Daily Tribune’s online show Wazzup!

He recalled thinking in 2020 how he would cope with the cancellation of his home studio ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise when the opportunity to work in a TV5 show came his way.

There was an opening in Rated Korina for a director of photography which he felt he could do. A Fine Arts graduate of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), David said he knew how to draw, operate a video camera and edit videos.

He got the job, and later on he was asked if he could also direct one of the show’s segments. He accepted the offer, taking it as a chance to learn something new.

Asked how he seemed to easily transition from actor to director, David said he did his homework and took his job seriously.

What he realized, he added, was that it’s harder to direct than to act. Eventually he understood why directors blow their top when they can’t get the shot they want.

It didn’t take long before he thought of putting up his own production outfit with two creative partners. He named it Dark Carnival Productions.

Explaining how he came up with the name, he said he looks at the entertainment industry as a carnival.

“And everyone has a dark side. Also, we’re like a dark horse standing side by side with the big players. DC are likewise my initials.”

Dark Carnival has done two documentaries, and its current projects are an online advertisement, the advocacy campaign, and an indie film. “We’re on our second draft of the script,” he said.

David has come a long way from his ethnic Chinese roots. His grandfather was an immigrant from mainland China who settled in Manila.

Born to a Chinese mother and a German father, he remembers attending a Buddhist school as a kid.

He was in college at UST when he was persuaded to join Mr. and Ms. Ideal Thomasian, a campus personality pageant. Two of the judges, ABS-CBN’s John Lapus and beauty queen coach Jonas Gaffud, saw his potential as an actor and model.

He did some modeling stints, and in 2008 he was cast in the ABS-CBN series My Girl starring Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. David played the twin brother of Alex Gonzaga and Kim’s close friend.

As a Star Magic talent, he has appeared in over 30 TV series including May Bukas Pa, Imortal, Juanita Banana, Saturday Night Chill (for which he won Best Supporting Actor in the Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival 2013 as a gambling lord), and his most recent project, Love Thy Woman.

As for his striking resemblance to Gong Yoo of Goblin fame, David said he’s a fan of the Korean actor but he’d rather be acknowledged as an artist with his own style and identity.
