ADVINCULA, DUTERTE AT LUNETA MILLENNIUM MASS

A special concelebrated mass called Misa Milenya -- will be said at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila’s Rizal Park (Luneta) on New Year’s eve.

Secretary Berna Romulo Puyat of the Department of Tourism (DOT), who chairs the Committee on the Turn-of-the-Century Celebration, said Jose Cardinal Advincula will officiate at the mass, scheduled for Dec. 31 at 5:00 P.M. An ecumenical prayer will precede the celebration of the mass to emphasize the ecumenical nature of the occasion, Araneta said.

Puyat said President Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte and other members of the First Family, will attend the holy mass.

Representatives of labor, women and children, fisherfolk, farmers, indigenous communities, and other sectors will join the First Family in the offertory procession.

Bro. Mike Velarde, the founder of El Shaddai DWXI Prayer Partners Foundation International, has announced that some 500,000 El Shaddai members will attend the millennium mass.

During the mass, seminarians, parish choirs and guest artists will render praise songs and traditional music. Meanwhile, bands from the Philippine Army and the Philippine Navy will also be on hand to provide music.

Araneta said Pope John Paul II’s message to the Filipino people will be read during the mass at the Quirino Grandstand as well as the selected Marian Shrines in various parts of the country.

At the Luneta and at least 10 shrines around the Philippines, there will be processions to be led by images of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The concelebrated Mass, which will project the Philippines as a pilgrimage destination in Asia, will be covered by the national multi-media with possible hook-up by satellite. It will also be recorded, with the videotape to be sent to the Sister Angelica Channel.

The religious activity has been arranged in cooperation with the Wells Spring of Life, Sacred Land of Asia, Marian Movement, Charismatic Movement of the Philippines, Confradia, and Association of Shrine Rectors and Pilgrimage Promoters of the Philippines.

The millennium mass is part of the Pistang Milenyo Filipino, the weeklong festivities prepared by the Estrada administration to welcome the new millennium.

The Philippines will welcome the new millennium with a nationwide kapit-bisig (linking of arms) on New Year’s Eve at the Rizal Park and other parts of the country to demonstrate the unity of all Filipinos in the 21st century.

President Duterte will lead the symbolic kapit-bisig ritual, which will be replicated all over the country.

Duterte signs law creating OFW department

The new Department of Migrant Workers consolidates key services for overseas Filipino workers under one agency

Towards the tail end of his administration, President Rodrigo Duterte finally signed into law a bill creating a department for the welfare of overseas Filipino workers, to be formally called Department of Migrant Workers.

Duterte affixed his signature to the law on Thursday, December 30, during a ceremony in Malacañang attended by lawmakers.

The law’s enactment is a fulfillment of Duterte’s 2016 presidential campaign promise to create an OFW department that would consolidate all relevant agencies under one to make it easier for migrant workers to get their documents and seek help from the government. His strong remarks about OFW welfare as a presidential candidate helped deliver him a landslide win among overseas Filipinos in the 2016 elections.

The President had asked Congress for this department in four State of the Nation Addresses.

Duterte had certified as urgent the Senate bills for creating the OFW department last May, after the House of Representatives had passed its version. The Senate eventually passed their version of the proposed legislation last December 14. Their version was then adopted by the House.

How will the new department change things?

The new law turns the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration into the Department of Migrant Workers, which would be mandated to oversee all policies protecting the welfare of OFWs.

The functions of other agencies currently under several government departments and handling different OFW concerns would be merged and transferred under the new agency. These offices include:

  • National Reintegration Center under the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)
  • All Philippine overseas labor offices under the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)
  • International Labor Affairs Bureau under DOLE
  • National Maritime Polytechnic under DOLE
  • Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs under the Department of Foreign Affairs
  • International Social Services Office under the Department of Social Welfare and Development
  • Commission on Filipino Overseas under the Office of the President

OWWA, meanwhile, would become an attached agency of the Department of Migrant Workers.

The new department would be tasked to regulate the recruitment, employment, and deployment of OFWs and spearhead investigations and file cases concerning illegal recruitment and human trafficking cases involving OFWs.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles has described the new department as envisioned to provide a more “efficient” way of handling the “multidimensional concerns” of OFWs.

Senator Joel Villanueva, the chairperson of the Senate labor committee, has said the new department could help OFWs navigate all the challenges of living abroad in a post-pandemic world.

But the Department of Migrant Workers was not without its critics.

Labor rights group Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (Sentro) rejected the proposed department, saying it would “institutionalize” the country’s reliance on labor exportation for economic development. Villanueva, after the Senate passed their bill, disagreed with this interpretation of the policy.

“We are in unison that it is not the policy of the state to promote overseas employment and it is our common aspiration that Filipinos will migrate or work abroad only out of choice and not out of necessity,” he had said last December 14.

Other groups like Center for Migrant Advocacy and Migrante, meanwhile, questioned the added value of a new department when there are ways to improve the old system, such as the establishment of one-stop service centers for OFWs in different parts of the country and the joint manual for overseas operations that harmonizes the efforts of the foreign affairs, labor, and social welfare departments when handling specific cases of OFWs in distress. – Rappler.com

In tragic ‘Probinsyano’ episode, Sharon’s anguished performance reminds why she is ‘Mega Star’

The action series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” went full drama in its Christmas Eve episode, as it explored the tragic past of Sharon Cuneta’s character Aurora — and reminded viewers just why the screen icon remains today one of showbiz’s most acclaimed actresses.

In the episode titled “Pag-ibig,” the reason behind Aurora’s resentment towards her father, Don Ignacio (Tommy Abuel), was finally revealed.

Aurora had flown back to the US upon news that Ignacio was in critical condition, after being ambushed by Mara (Julia Montes) and her group.

Now that Ignacio appeared on his way to recovery, Aurora told him she was finished with her obligation and would fly back to America. Ignacio pleaded with Aurora to stay, telling her he regrets the pain he had caused her.

In flashbacks, Ignacio kept apart Aurora and her boyfriend Oscar (Rowell Santiago), who at the time was a fisherman whom the Guillermo patriarch was convinced only wooed his daughter for their money.

The defiant Aurora eloped with Oscar, trading her luxurious upbringing for a life by the sea. There, she formed close ties with Oscar’s friends Armando (John Estrada) and Lolita (Rosanna Roces).

Unlike Lolita, who welcomed Aurora with open arms, Armando was cautious. He was concerned that Ignacio would retaliate, putting them and their fellow fishermen in the crossfire.

Armando’s worst fears came true. Nearly a year later, after both Lolita and Aurora gave birth to their respective children Laura and Maria Isabel, Ignacio managed to track down his daughter’s whereabouts.

Ignacio, accompanied by his equally ruthless brother Eduardo (Roi Vinzon) and their goons, rampaged through the fishing village to find Aurora.

Witnessing Oscar apparently getting shot dead, Aurora scurried away with her newborn in her arms. Entrusting Maria Isabel to Lolita, Aurora rushed back to Oscar, only to be captured by Eduardo.

Ignacio blamed an anguished Aurora for the loss of lives in the village, saying he ordered every single one killed. This led Aurora to believe that Maria Isabel died, too.

Ignacio appeared to immediately regret the massacre when the inconsolable Aurora revealed that he had a granddaughter, whose blood was now on his hands.

Aurora never saw the remains of Oscar and Maria Isabel.

Oscar survived and eventually became president of the Philippines — and so did Armando and Lolita, who raised a girl whom they would call Mara and mold as a vengeful weapon against Ignacio.

“FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” airs weeknights and is accessible on several platforms: Kapamilya Online Live, Kapamilya Channel, A2Z Channel 11, TV5, CineMo, iWant TFC, TFC, WeTV, and iflix.

Why Angelica Panganiban retired from teleseryes

Having brought to life dozens of teleserye characters in the past 30 years, Angelica Panganiban is now resolved to focus on her own, and to have a simple one with less time spent under the limelight.

“Mas simpleng buhay, mas tao,” Panganiban told ABS-CBN News, when asked about the new direction she wants to take in her life, after retiring from teleseryes.

The acclaimed actress remains active in showbiz, with a mini-series just released this month, and another set to premiere in early 2022.

But those two projects, unlike starring in a teleserye, have allowed Panganiban to strike a healthy balance between work and personal life, Panganiban shared.

Panganiban’s final teleserye was the primetime drama “Walang Hanggang Paalam,” which concluded in April 2021. She then took on back-to-back limited series — the ongoing “The Kangks Show” and the upcoming “The Goodbye Girl.”

May patayan. Masama ugali mo kung kontrabida ‘yung role mo. Kung bida ka, iyakin ka. So parang hanggang bahay dala mo siya. Hanggang hindi tapos ‘yung buong series, hindi ka nakaka let go.

“So may kasama siyang depression, kasi nauuwi mo ng bahay, hindi mo nari-release lahat. After a year ka lang makaka-move on, doon mo lang mali-let go lahat ng pain ng character. So mas madaling kargahin ang mini-series kaysa sa isang mahabang teleserye,” she explained.

Panganiban, whose acting career traces back to 1992, announced her decision to retire from teleseryes after she wrapped filming “Walang Hanggang Paalam,” and weeks before its run concluded.

Panganiban explained why, apart from the emotional baggage of carrying a teleserye portrayal, she is firm about no longer taking on the format for the remainder of her showbiz career.

“Thirty years ako sa industry. Since six years old ako, na sa harapan na ako ng camera. Ngayon, hindi ko sinasabing okay ‘yung pandemic, pero hinanapan ko ng magandang kinalabasan, ng outcome, ‘yung nangyari. Naging in touch ako sa sarili ko, and mas naging simple ‘yung mga choices ko sa buhay. And mas naging masaya ako,” she said.

Among Panganiban’s life decisions during the pandemic is residing in Olongapo City, with her current boyfriend, businessman Gregg Homan.

It’s all about hope

‘Hope that even if today you wake up amid the total destruction of a typhoon, the fact that you and your family are all alive and well means that there will be a tomorrow and a day after tomorrow and a day after the day after that.’

IN a matter of hours millions of children across the Philippines will be eagerly watching the clock, waiting for the hour hand to mark midnight which would signal the opening of gifts and the celebration of a feast – no matter how modest.

It will be a heartwarming moment for millions of Filipino families, the stroke of midnight.

But thousands will be unable to join the celebration because of Typhoon Odette, the wet blanket over this year’s celebrations. To them, we extend our prayers, and the modest help we are able to give through the many organizations offering support in cash or in kind. It will be poor consolation, but the experience of the Yolanda victims should be proof enough that sooner, if not later, the scars of Odette will be all that she will be remembered by.

While the pain of loss will remain, we will pick up from where we have fallen and march on.

As wags love to say, for as long as there is life, there is hope. And for as long as there is hope, darkness and gloom soon give way to light.

As a lapsed Catholic I have many times over (maybe too many times over hehe) quipped that we are marking on December 25th a Christian celebration of the birth of a Jew on a day that was special to pagans who believed in the Sun-God. It is well-established by science, I think, that the historical Jesus could not have been born in December: but the biblical Jesus was given this birth date to make it easier for pagans to switch allegiance from their old religious traditions to the Christian one.

What is the use of a religion anyway if it fails to take root on the consciousness of a people? Even if, when necessary, some twists and turns have to be incorporated into the myths that comprise the foundations of that religion.

It must be age, but as the years have gone by and Christmas carols no longer send shivers down my spine (the way going to piss does!) what I have learned to accept are not the myths that are perpetrated from generation to generation to keep the religion alive, but the value these myths bring to the believers, lapsed or otherwise.

That value is hope. Hope that even if today you wake up amid the total destruction of a typhoon, the fact that you and your family are all alive and well means that there will be a tomorrow and a day after tomorrow and a day after the day after that. Hope that even if a loved one is not well, only two things can happen – his lot will improve because it is the will of God, or he will find his rest because that too is the will of God. Hope that if this year was a challenging one, the next will be a better one, and if this year was a good one then next year will be a great one! Hope that if you did wrong this year, you have next year to make up for it. Hope that with hard work the dreams of today will be the reality of tomorrow.

There are so many imponderables in life and we can go crazy trying to figure them all out.

And all the more when what we are trying to comprehend is why we had to suffer a defeat or hardship, some loss or some tragedy. That’s where religion and faith and celebrations of Christmas Eve come in. That’s where the hope that they represent become most relevant and most valuable.

And so even a lapsed Catholic like me would still like to wish everyone a blessed Christmas: may your lives continue to be filled with hope about tomorrow being a new, and better, and brighter day.

For yourself and your loved ones.

Stay safe everyone as you celebrate the season.

Makabayan lawmakers revive call for ABS-CBN franchise renewal in wake the of Odette

Lawmakers belonging to the Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives on Thursday revived calls for the grant of a broadcast franchise to ABS-CBN Corp, citing the vacuum left by its shutdown in the coverage of the effects of Typhoon Odette.

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Eufemia Cullamat said there has been limited information in the Visayas and Mindanao on the effects of last week's typhoon.

"Ramdam ng taumbayan ang pagkawala ng ABS-CBN Regional Network [Group] dahil ito ang nagbibigay ng komprehensibong balita at impormasyon sa bawat rehiyon hinggil sa mga pangyayari sa iba’t-ibang dako ng bansa," Cullamat, who hails from Mindanao, said in a press briefing.

(The public felt the absence of ABS-CBN Regional Network Group because it provides comprehensive news and information in every region on what's happening in the country.)

Cullamat noted that the media plays a huge role in times of disasters, saying it could save lives.

Kabataan party-list Rep. Sarah Elago echoed the same sentiment.

Information provided by ABS-CBN Regional Network Group could fast-track disaster response, said ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro said

"Ngayon, nakita natin ang kabagalan ng Duterteng palpak sa pagtugon sa pandemiya at palpak sa pagtugon sa disaster," she said.

(Now, we can see the Duterte [administration's] failed response to the pandemic and failed response to the disaster.)

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate commended ABS-CBN for being among the first to reach Odette-ravaged areas even without a franchise.

"May dala silang satellite phones. Ito dapat ay isang basic na equipment sa mga lugar na tinatamaan ng kalamidad," he said.

(They brought satellite phones. This should be a piece of basic equipment in areas hit by calamities.)

Vice President Leni Robredo had also said the broadcast shutdown of ABS-CBN and its regional networks is highlighted during times of disaster such as Typhoon Odette.

“Napakahirap pong magpadala ng mga pictures except ‘yong mga galing doon na nakalabas na. Kahit kami na nandoon, mahirap mag-communicate dito. Ito po, very common na sinasabi sa amin na, 'Wala na kasing ABS-CBN, so wala na sa aming nagko-cover',” Robredo said when she recently shared her visits to Odette-affected areas.

(It was very hard to send pictures except for those who already got out. We found it hard to communicate when we were there. Telling us that 'Because there's no more ABS-CBN, so there's nobody covering our situation here was very common.)

Please help CEBU!"

(I could feel the impact of the shutdown of the ABS-CBN Regional, especially now that there is not much coverage on the current situation in Cebu due to Typhoon Odette. In the past, they are very quick in sending out a chopper for aerial inspection, breaking news, and sometimes, even in launching a special coverage.)

On July 10, 2020, a House of Representatives panel denied the company's application for a new franchise despite being cleared by regulatory agencies of alleged violations on media ownership and tax rules, among others.

As a result, ABS-CBN shut down its free TV and radio broadcast operations while thousands of its employees lost their jobs in the middle of a pandemic.

Prior to the shutdown, the network had 53 regional television and radio stations across the country that broadcast in six languages, providing millions of Filipinos local news and entertainment.

President Rodrigo Duterte had repeatedly threatened to pull the plug on the network over complaints of partisanship in the 2016 presidential elections, which ABS-CBN denied.

Malacañang last year said the network's exit from free television did not cause any "vacuum" on information dissemination during disasters, contrary to comments from the public and former officials.

It was responding to observations that there was a "vacuum" on information dissemination when Typhoon Rolly hit the country also late last year.

No problem with ABS-CBN reopening during Marcos presidency ‘if issues are resolved’ — Imee Marcos

For Senator Imee Marcos, there is “no problem” with the re-opening of media giant ABS-CBN — even as early as her brother, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s first 100 days in office if elected president — as long as issues linked to the network are resolved.

In a television interview on Tuesday, Senator Marcos was asked about her stand on the re-opening of the network should her brother get elected as president in next year’s elections.

“To my mind ABS, under the new construct defined by law and all the problems that have been already revealed, once it solves all that, para sa akin walang problemang buksan yan, first 100 days para makita natin (for me there is no problem with its re-opening, even on the first 100 days so that we can see),” the senator said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.

According to Marcos, she had previously worked with a member of the Lopez family back when she was governor of Ilocos Norte — during which time she claimed to not have encountered any problems at all.

In January 2020, Senator Marcos said she is keeping an “open mind” on proposals to extend the franchise of ABS-CBN despite her “turbulent history” with its owners.

ABS-CBN under then Eugenio Lopez Sr. was ordered closed in 1972 with the declaration of martial law by the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The media network resumed operations in 1986 several months after the EDSA People Power Revolution.

It was once again shut down in July 2020 after the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Franchises voted to deny the franchise renewal bid of the network despite several resource persons clearing ABS-CBN in issues such as alleged labor violations and tax evasion.
